Fruitful Living: Sustaining a Lifetime of Ministry

Summary

In embarking on this new series, "Ministry Matters: Sustaining a Lifetime of Service," the focus is on living a fruitful Christian life. This journey is for those who have been touched by God's grace, who have come to Christ in repentance and faith, and who now desire to please Him and be useful in His service. Jesus Christ has captured your mind, won your heart, and realigned your will. The essence of being a Christian is to bear much fruit, as this glorifies the Father and proves our discipleship. The series will explore how to sustain a ministry that lasts a lifetime, continually bearing fruit and demonstrating the reality of God's grace in our lives.

The parable of the sower, found in Matthew 13, serves as a foundational teaching for this series. It illustrates the different responses to the Word of God, emphasizing the importance of sowing the seed of the Word and understanding the varied outcomes. The parable is not just about the soil but fundamentally about the act of sowing. As sowers, we are called to plant the Word of God in the lives of others, whether they are young people, family, friends, or the unreached. Jesus teaches us not to be surprised or discouraged by the different responses people have to the Word.

Expectations play a crucial role in sustaining a lifetime of ministry. Many leave ministry because it was not what they expected. Whether you're a pastor, a life group leader, or a parent, you may face discouragement when the results don't match your expectations. Jesus' parable prepares us for these realities. Some will be unresponsive, some will show initial enthusiasm but fall away, and others will be distracted by the cares of the world. Yet, there will be those who are genuinely receptive, and the Word will bear abundant fruit in their lives.

The key to sustaining ministry is to stick with the proper seed—the Word of God. Exercise patience, as the seed grows over time, and watch your own heart, ensuring it remains fertile ground for God's work. Trust the outcome of your ministry to God, knowing that He can change the hardest of hearts. As we sow the seed, we pray for God to send the plow, breaking up hard ground and allowing the seed to take root and flourish.

Day 1: Bearing Fruit as Evidence of Discipleship
Living a fruitful Christian life is central to glorifying God and proving our discipleship. This fruit is not merely about external actions but is a reflection of the grace of God at work within us. As Christians, our lives should be a testament to the transformative power of God's grace, showing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Bearing fruit is essential for sustaining a lifetime of ministry, as it demonstrates the reality of God's work in our lives and encourages others to seek the same transformation. [01:25]

"By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples." (John 15:8, ESV)

Reflection: In what specific ways can you bear fruit in your daily interactions this week, and how can this fruit point others to Christ?

Day 2: Understanding Different Responses
The parable of the sower highlights the varied responses people have to the Word of God. Some hearts are unresponsive, others are initially enthusiastic but lack depth, and some are distracted by worldly concerns. Recognizing these responses helps us manage our expectations in ministry and remain faithful despite challenges. It is important to remember that our role is to sow the seed, trusting God to work in the hearts of those who hear. This understanding helps us to persevere in ministry, knowing that not all will respond positively, but some will bear abundant fruit. [11:23]

"And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature." (Luke 8:14, ESV)

Reflection: Think of someone in your life who seems unresponsive to the Gospel. How can you continue to sow seeds of faith in their life without becoming discouraged?

Day 3: The Role of Patience in Ministry
Ministry requires patience, as the growth of the Word in people's hearts is often a gradual process. We must trust that God's work is not always immediate but will bear fruit in due season. This patience helps us avoid discouragement and sustain our efforts over the long haul. By exercising patience, we acknowledge that God is in control and that His timing is perfect. Our responsibility is to remain faithful in sowing the seed and nurturing the growth, trusting that God will bring about the harvest in His time. [37:20]

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9, ESV)

Reflection: What is one area of your ministry or personal life where you need to exercise more patience? How can you remind yourself to trust in God's timing this week?

Day 4: Guarding Our Hearts
As sowers of the Word, it is crucial to guard our own hearts, ensuring they remain fertile ground for God's work. Ministry can be challenging, and we must be vigilant against becoming hardened, losing our joy, or allowing our lives to become too crowded with distractions. By keeping our hearts open and receptive to God's Word, we can continue to grow spiritually and be effective in our ministry. This involves regular self-examination, prayer, and seeking God's guidance to maintain a heart that is aligned with His will. [39:01]

"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life." (Proverbs 4:23, ESV)

Reflection: What distractions or challenges are currently threatening to harden your heart? How can you actively guard your heart against these influences this week?

Day 5: Trusting God with the Outcome
Ultimately, the outcome of our ministry is in God's hands. He can change the hardest of hearts and bring about a harvest where we least expect it. Our role is to faithfully sow the seed and trust God to do the rest. This trust in God's sovereignty allows us to release the burden of results and focus on being faithful stewards of the opportunities He gives us. By trusting God with the outcome, we can find peace and assurance that He is working all things for His glory and our good. [41:13]

"So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth." (1 Corinthians 3:7, ESV)

Reflection: Is there a specific situation in your ministry or personal life where you are struggling to trust God with the outcome? How can you surrender this situation to Him today?

Quotes

Jesus said, by this, my father is glorified here is how the father is glorified he said that you bear much fruit you have it on the front of your folder today uh roots life and fruit we often speak about at the orchard uh this is a bear fruit series it's about the fruit living a fruitful Christian life. [00:01:22]

The parable of the sower, very simply, sower goes out to sow Jesus says, and as he saws the seed falls on different kinds of ground some seed falls on a hard path it gets snatched away some seed falls on stony ground it springs up quickly but then the sun scorches it and it doesn't come to anything at all. [00:03:36]

Jesus is telling us in this story what to expect when we engage in the ministry of the word and he is telling us particularly not to be surprised and not to be discouraged when people respond in different ways to the word of God and this issue of expectations is the first theme that I want to label for you. [00:05:48]

Here are people who have invested thousands of dollars and years of their lives in training for a vocation that they entered and then left number one reason because it was not what I expected picture a young pastor and he's committed to the word of God he's fired up about preaching and about discipling. [00:07:11]

Some people are simply and evidently older versions of what they were before after a while this gets to him and the pastor begins to wonder if his work is really worth it now let me try and take that from the sort of pastor world and bring it into more immediately into the world in which most of us in the congregation will be sowing the word of God. [00:08:42]

You bring children into the world and their arrival brings you great joy and of course great expectations you're a Christian and so you determine uh together husband and wife that you are going to sow the word of God in their lives and so early on you establish prayer and a pattern of bible reading in your own home. [00:09:50]

Some people who hear the word will be unresponsive you see that in verse 19 when anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart this is what was sown along the path now if you are a sower you will know how hard and discouraging this is. [00:11:35]

Some people while some will be unresponsive you're going to find that as a sore of the word there are other people who immediately immediately become very responsive enthusiastic and uh look at what Jesus says verse 20 as for what was sown on rocky ground this is the one who hears the word and notice immediately very quick immediately receives it with joy. [00:16:04]

Receiving the kingdom with joy is not enough and this is a message that the modern church desperately needs to hear faith that is temporary and unproductive is not true faith most pastors would be quite happy if people received the word with joy or made claims about faith but this parable asserts that people can receive the word with joy and still be guilty of hardness of heart. [00:19:12]

There are many people who receive the word and they profess faith in Christ but using this picture the root system of the American dream fills the ground of their lives and instead of digging that out this is all about a life in which I'm going to be everything that I can be instead of digging that out they merely add faith to that root system. [00:29:14]

The distinguishing mark of every believer is that the word of God bears fruit in your life by this my father is glorified that you bear much fruit and so proof that you are my disciples the word of God bears the fruit of repentance the word of God bears the fruit of faith and of hope and of love and of obedience and of service and of perseverance. [00:32:44]

Stick with the proper seed what is the seed the seed is the word of God it is the only seed that produces Godward change one of the greatest responsibilities of any ministry leader and that's a vast number of us here have influence in some sphere is to make sure that the word of God is at the heart of any ministry for which you have responsibility.
