Fruit of the Spirit: Christ Produced, Not Performed

Galatians 5 holds up the Tree of Life by saying that a life rooted in Jesus will show something on the outside because the Holy Spirit produces something from the inside out. Paul says “the fruit of the Spirit,” not “the fruits,” and that one little word matters. The word karpos is singular, so Paul is not handing out a pick and choose list. The fruit is one fruit with nine flavors, one cluster with nine grapes, and one root producing one kind of life.

Paul writes to Galatians who had been brought into freedom in Christ but were being pressured back under the law. Paul is not just mildly bothered by that. Paul is ticked because these teachers were saying Jesus was necessary but insufficient. Galatians answers that lie by insisting that faith alone saves and that the Spirit, not the law, produces real righteousness.

Galatians 5 makes the contrast plain. Paul names the “works of the flesh,” and the word is plural because the flesh is fragmented and chaotic. Sexual sins, relational sins, spiritual sins, anger, jealousy, selfish ambition, and anything similar all show what happens when life is lived by “my way.” The works of the flesh can be manufactured by human effort, but they cannot produce the life God wants.

The fruit of the Spirit is different. Fruit is not forced by gritting teeth and trying harder. An apple tree does not produce apples because somebody yells at it to work harder. The tree produces apples because of what it is and what it is rooted in. In the same way, the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control as Christ is formed inside a person.

The fruit also paints a portrait. Love, peace, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control finally describe Jesus. The Holy Spirit’s job is to reproduce Christ in believers, not to help religious people hang fake apples on a fence post. Hanging a bag of apples on a fence post may look right from far away, but it is not an apple tree. Religious performance can look Christian for a while, but fake fruit eventually spoils.

Christ gives rest to the weary who are tired of pretending. The answer is not to work harder at patience or fake joy a little longer. The answer is to come to Jesus, sink roots deeper into him, and let the Spirit produce what the law never could.
