The Fruit Inspector: Rotten Roots, Rotten Fruit

Matthew 7 brings Jesus to the searching end of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus begins chapter 7 by warning against fleshly judgment, then calls for discernment about what is holy, what is true, and which path leads to life. Jesus now gives a serious warning: false prophets can look right on the outside while being completely wrong underneath. The peach full of worms pictures the danger clearly. Leaves can look healthy, words can sound spiritual, and appearances can impress people, but what is inside eventually tells a different story.

Jesus says, “Beware,” because false teaching does not usually announce itself. False prophets come in sheep’s clothing, using Bible language, talking about Jesus, and often sounding sincere. Satan himself used that same kind of deception in the garden when he asked, “Yea, hath God said?” Satan did not begin with an outright denial of God, but with a twisting of what God had said. False teaching still works that way, with a little less repentance, a little less holiness, a little less surrender, and a little more self.

The Word of God becomes the magnifying glass for judging fruit. Scripture must test every claim, every tradition, every online voice, every supposed word from God, and every spiritual experience. Bible language is not the same as Bible truth. The better believers know what is real, the easier it becomes to recognize what is counterfeit. The local church also matters because faithful teaching, mature believers, fellowship, and correction keep people from drifting into self-religion, self-sufficiency, and self-righteousness.

Jesus says, “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Fruit reveals the root. Teaching should lead people toward Christ, Scripture, repentance, and obedience rather than toward bondage, pride, division, or fixation on a personality. Lives should show humility, integrity, love, and submission to Christ rather than using people for gain. Influence should produce believers who are more grounded in Scripture, more humble, and more willing to be corrected.

Jesus also turns the fruit inspection inward. Religious decorations, church culture, right words, and outward activity cannot replace a changed heart. Sin has corrupted the root, so the answer is not taping better fruit onto a dead tree. Christ lived the life sinners could not live, died the death sinners deserved, and rose in victory. Jesus does not merely improve the fruit. Jesus completely changes the root through repentance, faith, forgiveness, and new life.
