God’s Word is living and active, discerning our hearts and shaping us for God’s purposes. It pierces through our motivations, revealing where our hearts are aligned or misaligned with God’s will. As we gather together, we are reminded that Scripture is not just a historical document but a living force that teaches, reproves, corrects, and trains us in righteousness so that we may be equipped for every good work. Submitting ourselves to God’s Word is the foundation for transformation, both individually and as a church, as we pursue the heart of God together. [01:40]
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Reflection: Where in your life do you sense God’s Word challenging your motivations or desires, and how can you intentionally submit that area to His shaping today?
God calls us to move from misplaced fear to confident faith, trusting in His purpose and provision rather than our own strength or the approval of others. Like Adam and Eve, and later Saul, we often hide or act out of fear—fear of missing out, fear of not being enough, or fear of what others think. Yet God’s desire is that we would not be ruled by fear but would align our hearts with His, finding our true purpose in Him. Jesus restores our ability to live out this purpose, inviting us to trust Him fully and to let go of the need to control or protect ourselves. [07:40]
1 Samuel 12:20-21, 24 (ESV)
And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty… Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.”
Reflection: What is one area where fear is holding you back from trusting God’s purpose, and what step of faith can you take today to surrender that fear to Him?
Trusting in the Lord and delighting in Him transforms our desires and aligns our hearts with His, leading us to faithful obedience and joy. David’s life illustrates that true faith is not about safety or control but about surrender—committing our way to God, befriending faithfulness, and finding joy in His presence. As we trust and delight in God, our desires are shaped to reflect His, and we become people after God’s own heart, living out His purposes wherever He has placed us. [22:43]
Psalm 37:3-6 (ESV)
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
Reflection: What is one practical way you can “delight yourself in the Lord” today, allowing Him to shape your desires and actions?
Even when we fall short or give in to fear, God’s grace upholds us, inviting us to repent, get back up, and continue pursuing Him with confidence in Christ’s righteousness. David’s journey was marked by both great faith and significant failures, yet his confidence was not in his own perfection but in God’s steadfast love and grace. When we stumble, we are not cast off; instead, God’s hand lifts us up, reminding us that our identity and future are secure in Christ. This frees us from the fear of not being enough and empowers us to keep moving forward in faith. [32:10]
Psalm 37:23-24 (ESV)
The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.
Reflection: When you experience failure or fear, how can you intentionally turn to God’s grace and let Him lift you up to keep pursuing Him?
God’s ultimate desire is to transform us—individually and as a church—into people after His own heart, embodying His presence and extending His kingdom through Christ. The promise given to David finds its fulfillment in Jesus, the true Son of David, who perfectly aligned His will with the Father’s and opened the way for us to do the same. As we look to Christ, we are drawn away from fear and the empty pursuits of the world, and we are invited into the joy of knowing, loving, and serving God together. Our transformation is not just for ourselves but for the blessing of others, as God’s beauty and purpose are revealed through us. [38:00]
2 Samuel 7:12-13, 16 (ESV)
When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever… And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.
Reflection: In what ways can you join with others in your church or community this week to pursue God’s heart together and extend His presence where you are?
As we gather in a new space today, it’s a powerful reminder that the church is not defined by a building, but by a people who continually seek God’s heart together. Our journey is one of transformation—moving from fear to faith, from self-protection to surrender, and from pursuing our own desires to aligning with God’s purposes. This is not just an individual pursuit, but a collective calling for us as a church family to become a people after God’s own heart.
Looking at the life of David, we see a vivid illustration of what it means to be shaped by God. David’s story is not just about his successes, but about his willingness to let God refine him, even through failure. Like Adam and Eve, and like Saul before him, David faced fear and temptation to trust in himself or in the approval of others. Yet, what set David apart was his confidence in God’s faithfulness and his willingness to repent and realign his heart when he failed. The difference between Saul and David was not perfection, but trajectory—David was on a path of pursuing God, even when he stumbled.
Fear is a universal human experience. We see it in the garden with Adam and Eve, in Israel’s demand for a king, and in Saul’s insecurity and need for approval. Fear often leads us to seek control, to protect ourselves, and to look for security in things other than God. But God calls us to a different way—a way of faith that surrenders control and trusts in His goodness, even when it’s uncomfortable or costly.
Psalm 37 gives us a practical vision for this journey: trust in the Lord, do good even when it’s inconvenient, dwell where God has placed us, and befriend faithfulness. As we delight in God, our desires are transformed to match His, and our lives become a reflection of His character. This is not a transactional relationship where obedience guarantees blessings, but a process of becoming—being shaped into the likeness of Christ.
When we fail, God’s grace invites us to get back up, to repent, and to keep moving forward. Our confidence is not in our own righteousness, but in Christ’s. Ultimately, our hope is anchored in the promise that God is establishing His kingdom through Jesus, the true man after God’s own heart. As we walk this path together, God’s pruning and shaping in our lives will not only transform us, but will bless and strengthen our whole church family. Let’s embrace the joy of knowing God, living out His purposes, and moving from fear to faith together.
1 Samuel 13:13-14 (ESV) — > And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
Psalm 37:3-6 (ESV) — > Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
The destination that we're headed towards is God's heart. That's what we're after this morning. That's what we're after this series. That's what we're after in our life as we pursue the Lord. And we're going to seek to move forward individually as people, but then also collectively as a church. And my heart's desire is that we as a church, Valley Community Church, we would become a church after God's heart. Not just people after God's heart, but a collective, a church unified together, pursuing God's heart here or wherever we are. [00:03:09]
All of us, on this side of eternity, we are in a shaping season. None of us have arrived yet. Some of us are closer than others, but we are all in a shaping season. Our hearts to align with God's heart. And our hearts are not fully aligned with God's heart. And that started with the first two humans, Adam and Eve. [00:04:26]
As humans, we are fearful. I think partly because we're finite, we're vulnerable, we are limited, we're fragile. And Adam and Eve, they had this fear that they were missing out, that they weren't going to have all that they needed, that God was holding back from them. And they had this fear that resulted in them rebelling against a holy and good God. [00:05:33]
I want to say this morning that I believe we're going to see how God calls us to be people of fear to people of faith. People of fear to people of faith. [00:07:07]
In order to find your true purpose that you're created for, you've got to find God's purpose. You want to find your purpose? Well, first find God's purpose and then jump into God's purpose. That's where we will find God's purpose, aligning ourselves with his. Jesus is the one who restores our purpose. He restores the ability for us to find our purpose in God. [00:07:37]
The amazing thing is, as we look to God's word, God is extremely kind. He is so kind and gracious to allow us for our hearts to be shaped and aligned with his heart. To love and trust God's will. But, for honest, that's a little scary. I know, at least for me, it is. It's like, well, that's really, that's kind of appealing. But there's also a level of fear and of uncertainty, even in the idea of, I don't know if I fully want to align my heart with God. Because what might that cost me? [00:08:32]
We're called to look, where are we in the story? And as we jump into this story about David, this isn't just a story about David. This is also our story. It's the ongoing story of redemption, and we're in the middle of it. So we need to find ourselves, and then we need to quickly find God and what he's calling us to within the story. [00:10:00]
Israel had a need for a leader who would guide them in faithfulness. They needed a leader, but the thing was, they already had a leader. You know who their leader was? Well, it was God. And God said, I'm your leader. I am your king. You follow me. You align your heart to me. [00:11:16]
Saul gives in to fear. And he, instead of living a life of faith, he is led by fear. He makes fearful decisions and he acts rashly. He puts himself in impatience because of fear of the people and the enemies. He puts himself in the role of priest, which is disobedience to God. He's motivated by fear, not by faith. He tries to do the right things, but he does them in the wrong way. If you do the right thing, but for the wrong reason, it's wrong. [00:15:57]
God was seeking for someone who would follow and know God's rule. God made David king eventually. Do you know why? Because he was an amazing follower. Because he was an amazing follower of God. That's what it means to be a person, a man, a woman after God's heart. That you follow God's will and desire and joyful obedience. [00:16:58]
Saul's desire was to be honored before people more than honoring God. He had it backwards. And I think as we study the life of David, we're looking at David, but I think we all have a propensity to be little Saul's, don't we? Well, we are more concerned about what people think than what God thinks. We're more worried about what others think, and it really goes down to a lack of confidence in God. [00:19:16]
Faith is not safe for us. Do you know why? Because when we have true faith in God, we, it's surrender. We give up control. Oh, we like to have the control, don't we? But faith gives up control. And so we're called to have faith and not fear. [00:20:43]
If you are, find yourself wondering what people are thinking more often than you're wondering what God is thinking, then you probably have a fear of man more than a fear of God. What is, what is man thinking? What is, what are people going to think or do think versus what does God think and what is God going to think? It's wrongly placed fear and it will blind us from aligning our hearts to God. [00:21:13]
We trust, we see from the example of David that he trusted God's commands. He trusted in God's faithful care. But then it wasn't just a trust. It was a love for God. The trust reflected his love for God to find joy and confidence in God's commands. [00:22:33]
Doing good is inconvenient anyone else experience that I just think anytime you want to do good it's usually going to be inconvenient it's not going to be easy but we have to remember that God's way is better and one of the ways that we do this is the second part of verse three where it says we dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness what that means is we rely on God wherever we are whether we're in North Lafayette or South Erie or at home or in our neighborhood are on vacation we rely on God wherever we are and wherever he has strategically placed you he strategically placed you in your family he has by no mistake strategically placed you in your job he has you might think that you chose it but he strategically placed you to be in your neighborhood and I believe that he strategically placed us to be in this location and it says to dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. [00:23:37]
If you want to grow and be like God and reflect his faithful love well guess what befriend faithfulness get around faithfulness spend time with faithfulness spend God spend time with the faithful God of the Bible with faithfulness with us with the believers within the church get to know faithfulness. [00:25:00]
When you delight in God guess what you're birds of a feather feather flock together and your desires are transformed into God's desires and so now you have a new desire that God wants to fulfill and your desires become God's desires and the focus is not you getting what you want the focus is delighting in God. [00:27:52]
That's what we're after not doing the right thing but becoming the right thing becoming the right person being transformed more into the image of Christ our heart transformed to be Christ heart. [00:29:03]
Commit your way to the Lord trust in him and he will act this really gets to the idea of surrender to the Lord one of the practical habits that I try to do and I don't always do because I wake up extremely tired sometimes hopefully the season will pass but I try to wake up and the first thing that hits the ground is my knees because I need to re -surrender to the Lord and cry out to God like what we sang together Lord I I need you today because I know that I have a propensity towards fear I have a propensity to try to self -protect and self -provide I have a propensity to make myself big and you small and I need you to be big in my life today and I need you today I need your Holy Spirit to help me and so that's how we align our our hearts with God by committing our way to follow him day in and day out and when we pursue the heart of God I believe that's when God moves us from fear to faith it's a journey it's a process our confidence in God. [00:29:34]
As our desires are being changed to be more like God's desires our hearts to be God's heart then our desires to be transformed to be more like him but it's a slow process it's arduous okay it's frustrating isn't it oh man in our small groups and and one -on -ones with you all we we get to talk about it sometimes the process is just frustrating I wish it was just overnight. [00:31:26]
God's desire for you is to be transformed more to be like him for you to be set apart not just transformed for the sake of being transformed but set apart for God's use set apart for God's use God wants to transform us to look and smell and act like Christ not live in fear but in faith. [00:32:06]
David had many failures didn't he but you know how he responded he repented and one of the reasons why he repented is because he was so confident in knowing who God was that his desire for him God's desire for him was to pull him back up he understood at a deep level the grace of God to get back up and to pursue God again and so his confidence was in God's grace and our confidence is in God's grace because it is in the blood of Christ as New Testament Christians our confidence when we fall when we mess up we can get back up why because we have a God who loves us who gave us Christ our confidence is in Christ's righteousness not our own and that frees us from fear it frees us from the fear of not shaping being being good enough being shaped up enough as Christians we can get back up. [00:35:51]
The only way that we can be a person a people a church after God's own heart is we follow Christ we we can't do it except for we find ourselves in in Christ in the identity of who he is and follow after him that's the only way that we are to embody the presence of God to be transformed into the image the likeness of Christ. [00:38:47]
How do we deal with going how do we go from fear to faith well we look to that which is better and that's God and he's given us his son Jesus we look to to Christ to be a people after God's own heart to be able to love God and obey God and serve God and love others and serve others and to extend God's rule in our hearts and in our world. [00:40:14]
When god prunes us when he trains us when he forms us more into the image of christ it is a beautiful journey it is more beautiful than before and sometimes we'll resist in fear but god wants to shape us not just for the benefit of ourselves but for the benefit of one another and that's part of what i mean when i say that our prayer should be that god would make us a church after god's own heart that we would be able to benefit from one another one another the pruning and the transformation that happens in our lives we get to benefit from that together and join together. [00:42:10]
