Friendship With the World Is Enmity With God

James sets earthly wisdom against heavenly wisdom, showing that earthly wisdom feeds lust, conflict, frustration, and rebellion against God. James calls this wisdom demonic because it trains fallen hearts to seek self fulfillment, self indulgence, self satisfaction, and personal glory rather than what pleases God. Friendship with that world is not harmless involvement in ordinary life. Friendship with the world is giving love, attention, desire, and passion to a value system that stands against God.

James uses the painful picture of adultery because saved people stand in a covenant relationship with God. God loved, rescued, cleansed, and adorned Israel, yet Israel ran after other gods like an unfaithful wife running after strangers. Christ has likewise loved the church, gave Himself for her, and brought believers into a relationship that calls for faithfulness. The world becomes an old lover when money, popularity, possessions, career, politics, pleasure, or acceptance begin receiving the affection that belongs to God.

God’s jealousy is not sinful jealousy. God’s jealousy is the right and holy love of a Husband who will not share His redeemed people with idols. A husband does not call it faithfulness when his wife keeps old relationships alive and gives another man her heart. God does not call it faithfulness when His people say they love Him while continuing to dabble in what the world loves. James leaves no middle ground: whoever chooses friendship with the world makes himself an enemy of God.

God’s grace shines brightest in verse 6: “But he gives more grace.” God resists the proud who defend their wandering, but He gives grace to the humble who repent. Hosea and Gomer put that grace into flesh and blood, as Hosea went after his unfaithful wife, paid the price to redeem her, and received her back. Christ has paid an even greater price, not with silver or gold, but with His precious blood.

God still calls wandering hearts back from the filth of old lovers. God searches, draws, receives, and restores those who humble themselves before Him. The passions of this world may bring joy for a season, but earthly wisdom finally produces pain, heartache, conflict, and frustration. God calls believers to examine what stirs their hearts, what drives their lives, and whether love for Him is greater than love for the world.
