Friends Who Bring Others to Jesus for Healing

Mark 2:1-12 puts five friends in front of a packed house and shows what real friendship looks like. The four friends care about their paralyzed friend enough to do whatever it takes to get him to Jesus. The crowd does not stop them, the roof does not stop them, and the cost of repairing that roof does not stop them. True friends are not just acquaintances who know about somebody. True friends care enough to help somebody get where they need to go.

Jesus uses the physical healing to show something bigger than the miracle itself. The world is broken because people are broken, and physical healing only lasts for a lifetime. Spiritual healing lasts for eternity. Jesus sees the faith of all five men, not just the faith of the man on the cot, and their united faith brings their friend right before the One who can help him.

Jesus deals with the man’s sin before He deals with the man’s paralysis. The scribes understand that only God can forgive sins, so they call Jesus’ words blasphemy in their hearts. Jesus knows exactly what they are thinking, and that alone shows who He is. Jesus then asks which is easier: to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to tell a paralyzed man to get up and walk.

Jesus heals the man in front of everybody so they will know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins. The man who was carried into that house on a bed walks out carrying his bed. The miracle proves that Jesus can do what only God can do. Jesus can heal the body, but more importantly, He can forgive sin and make people right with God.

The scribes care more about finding fault with Jesus than they care about the broken man in front of them. Jesus cares about the man’s physical need and his eternal need. Christ came to seek and save that which was lost, because money, power, possessions, and good behavior cannot fill the place only God can fill. Jesus paid the penalty for sin on the cross, rose again, and offers forgiveness to anyone who believes in Him. The friends point toward the calling of every Christ follower: nobody can be the Savior, but anybody can be a friend who helps someone else meet Jesus.
