Bible readingJohn 20:1-18 (ESV)
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
Observation questions- What details did the disciples find when they first arrived at the tomb, and what was their initial reaction?
- What was Mary Magdalene doing while the other disciples left the tomb? [11:14]
- Even when Jesus was standing right in front of her, why did Mary not recognize him? [11:47]
- What specific, heartbreaking statement did Mary make that showed she was still living in the "old story" of death? [12:21]
Interpretation questions- The story of the butterfly release [01:05] illustrates a gap between expectation and reality. How does the experience of the disciples on Friday and Sunday morning mirror this same gap?
- Why is it significant that the resurrection happened at the disciples' lowest point, "when the stone was still sealed, when everyone else had gone home, when nobody was ready"? [17:51]
- The story of the Holocaust survivors [13:47] describes liberation that didn't feel like freedom. How does Mary's experience at the tomb reflect a similar struggle to accept a new reality?
- What does Jesus simply calling Mary by her name reveal about how God meets us in our confusion and grief? [20:12]
Application questions- Where in your life have you experienced a "gap between the story you hoped for and the story you find yourself standing in"? [05:04] What did that feel like?
- Grief can rewire our perception so that we "stand inside resurrection and still make plans to retrieve a lost past." [12:42] Is there an area of your life where you are still living in a "Friday" story, struggling to believe a "Sunday" reality is possible?
- The resurrection broke through at the worst possible moment, not when faith was perfect. [17:29] What does this truth say about where God might be at work in your current struggles or doubts?
- God calls us by name in the middle of our confusion. [20:12] What would it look like this week to listen for God's personal call to you, especially in an area where you feel bewildered or stuck?
- The proclamation is that fear, shame, and cruelty "do not get the final word." [20:35] Which of these forces feels most final in your life right now, and how can the truth of the resurrection challenge its power?
- The story of Jesus is not over, and therefore your story is not over. [19:48] What is one "next chapter" you have been afraid to hope for that this truth might make you open to again?
