Remembering Freedom: Stories Around the Table

A family table can turn ordinary dinner into a kind of time machine. Stories about school shoes, milking cows, driving a bus at sixteen, and a little chess set carried through Vietnam tell the next generation where they came from. Tables preserve memory, and stories tell people who they are.

Exodus 12 places Israel at a table before Israel ever takes a step out of Egypt. God does not tell enslaved people to sharpen swords, review the escape plan, or pack every bag. God gives them a lamb, unleavened bread, bitter herbs, family, and a story. God knows that tomorrow will change everything, but God also knows that freedom has to be remembered years later, when children ask, “Why is this night different from all the other nights?”

Passover makes freedom something Israel can taste, smell, and pass around the table. The unleavened bread remembers the haste of leaving. The bitter herbs remember the bitterness of slavery. The story remembers the God who heard their cries, remembered them, and brought them out. Human beings do not always forget facts, but they easily forget what the facts mean. Fear, old prayers, opened doors, and the people who carried them can all fade from memory.

Israel will carry more than possessions out of Egypt. Israel will carry memories that save them, but Israel will also carry fear, shame, survival instincts, and generations of being told they were slaves. The wilderness will reveal how quickly Egypt can remain in a people after they have left Egypt. Some chains feel familiar enough that they no longer feel like chains at all.

Freedom, then, is not simply getting to do whatever somebody wants. Israel is freed from serving Pharaoh so that Israel can belong to God. Pharaoh measures people by bricks, production, and usefulness. God says, “You’re mine.” God leads Israel toward Sinai, covenant, Sabbath, manna, and a different way to live. Freedom becomes the costly work of learning who God created people to be.

The Passover table finally points toward the table where Jesus gives the old story new meaning. Christ gathers his people again and again so that fear, failure, the past, and other people’s expectations do not get the final word. Egypt does not own God’s people anymore. Pharaoh does not get the final word. God’s people belong to God through Christ.
