Freedom: Spiritual Roots, Created Dignity, Civic Stewardship

Freedom begins as a spiritual reality before it ever becomes a political blessing. John 8 puts Jesus in front of people who believed in him, and Jesus says that continuing in his word makes true disciples who know the truth and are set free. Sin is not just a mistake or a bad habit. Sin is slavery, bondage, chains, and only the Son can make a person “really free.”

Christ gives the freedom no government can give and no government can take. National liberty is beautiful, but spiritual freedom is essential. A person can live under oppression in North Korea, Sudan, China, Afghanistan, Iraq, or Iran, and still be free in Christ. A person can also live in political liberty and still be enslaved to sin. Richard Allen shows that truth clearly, because a man born enslaved could be spiritually free in Christ before he was physically freed.

Freedom also goes back to creation. Genesis 1 says God made man in his own image, male and female, and that truth gives every human being immeasurable value. Human equality is not first a political idea. “All men are created equal” is a biblical doctrine. The first word God gives man in Genesis 2 is not “be good” or “go to church.” The first word is, “You are free.” Freedom comes from the heart of God.

The Declaration of Independence echoes that creation truth when it says human beings are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights. Slavery was a horrible contradiction to that truth, and slavery was wrong then and is wrong now. Yet the words “all men are created equal” became a self-correcting standard that later judged the nation’s own sin and gave abolitionists, black Americans, pastors, and others the framework to tear slavery down.

First Samuel 8 warns that freedom can be traded away. Israel wanted a king “like all the other nations,” and God said six times that the king would take. Tyranny takes sons, daughters, fields, vineyards, servants, livestock, and finally freedom itself. Freedom requires virtue, because a people who forget the value of liberty will trade it for comfort.

Freedom should finally lead to worship. Psalm 116 says, “You have loosened my bonds,” and Psalm 107 says God breaks chains apart. Love for country must stay beneath love for Jesus. Gratitude for America should rise higher into worship of the God who authors every true freedom.
