56s
“``Sin will not rule us. We are, as he says, in verse 16, we are to obey God. This is a definition of freedom that is foreign to our culture. Well, I'm free, I can do what I want. Right? Now, Paul says, that's slavery because you're enslaved to yourself you can't trust yourself that way. We are free to be who we truly are and we are free to obey and that has eternal consequences.”
52s
“We are not ruled by sin. Sin can't lord it over us. because we are under grace. there's one little thing in there, one letter in the Greek, it's an s that makes it future. Sin will have no power over you. In other words, it's a process. It doesn't happen, bing, you're free from sin, it's all good. How do I know that? Because that's what Paul says next. What then? Do we give ourselves to sin because we know grace now? Wow. I can do anything I want because God will forgive me.”
67s
“Because what happens? It happened to me, I suspect it happened to you. I say, I'm going to do right, and I have a resolve, and I do right, and then sooner or later, I fail to do right. And then, I despair and the cycle starts all over again. Lather, rinse, repeat. That's that's the cycle of sin and addiction. Goes fine for a while, failure start over. Jesus breaks that. What did we sing? chains gone. I've been free. Now, that's the reality that Jesus gives us and asks us to live into and that is our lives.”
58s
“And there we are. We are free to sin. We are dead to it. Why? Because we have died with Christ. Where? In baptism. That's in back in verse four and verse five. He died, we die. He lives, we live. And the life we live is his life. Our hearts are transformed. This is astonishing to me. This is life changing. This is the most challenging thing I know of in our our faith. We are free to sin. We are freed from sin.”
