Paul calls his treasured credentials rubbish compared to knowing Christ. His circumcision, his ancestry, and his zeal once established his status before God and people. Paul does not reject Judaism as worthless. The Jewish tradition remains a treasure and a gift. But knowing Christ is so much better that even these treasures seem like trash by comparison.
Christ’s freely given grace leaves no room for making gentile converts become fully Jewish before they can belong to God’s people. Paul fiercely rejects that system of status and control. God’s promises to Israel find their fulfillment in Christ, not in barriers that keep people away from grace.
The contrast between treasure and trash also exposes a Christianity emptied of the gospel. Bonhoeffer’s criticism of Union Theological Seminary names the danger plainly: Christianity can become a branch of humanism, with plenty to say about current events but little about Jesus Christ, the cross, sin and forgiveness, death and life.
Bonhoeffer’s warning about stupidity names another kind of captivity. Stupidity is not a lack of intelligence. Overwhelming political and religious powers can pressure even highly educated people to surrender their judgment. Slogans and catchwords take possession of the mind. More facts and more education cannot, by themselves, restore the freedom that has been given away.
God does not meet human captivity with contempt. God comes in Christ Jesus, entering human suffering through Christ’s death and resurrection. Christ’s freedom does not make anyone immune to fear or manipulation, but it offers a way through and a way out. Christ’s grace grounds human worth beyond credentials, intelligence, or control over others.
That freedom carries responsibility: seeking truth, resisting injustice, and continuing to love people who support it. Love keeps community possible without surrendering judgment. Christ’s resurrection and the sharing in his sufferings free people to cultivate wisdom and responsibility before God.
Artificial intelligence brings this same tension into daily life. AI can make knowledge accessible and help solve difficult problems. But AI can also offer the illusion of wisdom without responsibility, or companionship without the mutuality and formative friction of community. The danger is not simply diminished intelligence, but surrendered judgment.
Christ, not intelligence or superintelligence, is the source of salvation. The faithful use of technology serves truth, love, community, and responsible decisions. Christ frees people from proving their worth and calls them to live courageously as free people.
