Freedom in Christ: Stand Firm Against Legalism

Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia comes right at the problem, and Paul does not ease into it. Paul is astonished that these believers are “so quickly” deserting the grace of Christ and turning toward a different gospel, which is really no gospel at all. The Judaizers were pressing Gentile believers to take on circumcision, dietary laws, and the old Mosaic customs as if Jesus plus the law equals salvation. Paul calls that nonsense a distortion of the good news, even a lie about God.

Christ did not come to give sinners a better shot at keeping the law. Christ came to fulfill the law, to free people from its condemnation, and to turn them loose into the world with salvation and life. Galatians is, in that sense, the Magna Carta of Christian Liberty. Its big word is freedom, and Galatians 5 brings that word right to the front: “For freedom Christ has set us free.” Paul tells the church to stand firm and not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

The law, when used as a ladder up to God, crushes the sinner. If circumcision becomes the way to satisfy God, then the whole law comes down with it. The person who wants to be justified by law has to keep all of it, and no one can. Legalism promises a clear conscience through lists, boxes, rituals, and harder trying, but it only leaves the soul enslaved.

The world offers another ditch. If rules crush, then throw them all out. Live it up, follow desire, become the law unto the self. But that road does not lead to freedom either. The flesh becomes its own master, and the person who thought the law was bondage ends up bound to desire, emptiness, and being pushed and pulled by whatever wants control.

Paul’s answer is Jesus. Righteousness does not come through the law, or Christ died for no purpose. God sent the Son under the law to redeem those under the law, so that slaves become sons and daughters, heirs through God. Freedom comes as an absolute gift, received by faith, filled by the Spirit, and lived out in love.

The law comes back, then, not as a whip but as a gift. The whole law is fulfilled in one word: love the neighbor as the self. Good works do not save anyone. God does not need good works to write a name in the Lamb’s book of life, but the neighbor needs them. Christ frees the church to fail, to be forgiven, and to be sent again in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.
