Paul is trying to get this word over: the law no longer has the power to judge the one who is in Christ or require that old punishment. Christ has answered the punishment sin deserved, and the fear of condemnation does not control those who have the Holy Spirit. The Spirit in the heart lets a person reach down and ask God for help with whatever is ailing the mind, even those thoughts that should not be there.

Paul has no problem with the law itself. The law came from God, and the law separated Israel from the world, but the problem was keeping it. The flesh is not inherently evil, because everything God created was good, but the flesh is weak. God had a remedy for that weakness, and that remedy was sending His Son.

The law exposed sin and condemned sin, but the law could not overcome the weakness of the flesh. Punishment may be attached to wrong, just like jail time or the death penalty, but punishment by itself does not stop every heart from doing wrong. Christ came because the flesh needed more than warning. The flesh needed the Spirit of God.

The Spirit gives the believer the ability to ask God for strength when the flesh is weak. The righteousness requirements of the law are not destroyed, but fulfilled through Christ. The law is fulfilled, but it has no more power to condemn those who are in Him.

Paul sets two ways before the church: the mind governed by earthly desires and the life governed by the Spirit. Earthly desire shows up in the hunger to be popular, to be seen, to be rich, to be driven by followers and attention. The Spirit leads a person to find ways to do God’s will rather than just chasing personal desire. Love, peace, meekness, and faith become signs that the Spirit is ordering the steps.

The flesh shows itself through partiality, favoritism, pride, and selfish judgment. Social media, technology, and AI are not the real enemy by themselves. The problem is the flesh using good tools in harmful ways. God gives knowledge, but the flesh bends it toward selfishness.
