Freed from the Law, Enslaved to God

Eugene Peterson’s line sets the frame: “the Jesus way wedded to the Jesus truth leads to the Jesus life.” The Jesus life is the call. Paul then says in Romans 7 that the baptized are “discharged from the law, dead to that which held” them captive. But Paul will not let freedom float as self-rule. He ties it to service. Romans 7 flows out of Romans 6, where the same grace that frees from sin makes believers “enslaved to God,” with fruit leading to sanctification and the end that is eternal life. So freedom in Christ is both freedom from the law that brings death, from sin, and from death itself, and freedom for God. As Galatians says, “for freedom Christ has set” his people free, which means free to live as free people.

The counterfeit says freedom is doing and saying whatever a person wants because he wants. That, Paul would say, is another slavery. The Exodus story gives the charter of freedom. God did not say, “have fun and find your true selves.” God said, “You shall have no other gods before me,” all the way to “You shall not covet.” God sets slaves free to be enslaved by grace and mercy. Jeremiah agrees. “A man’s way is not his own to choose.” Freedom needs God’s road.

A work scene makes it plain. A signed job description binds a person to act with integrity. At work, the word given rules the day. That is freedom from falsehood and deception and freedom for integrity. The church’s “job description” is the Great Commission: go, make disciples, baptize into the Name, and teach them to observe all that Jesus commanded. But this is more than a job. This is a way of life, not nine to five, but twenty four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year, with a break to eat, drink, and sleep.

Worship trains this life. God’s word is heard, praise is sung, prayers are offered, and the church says the faith in the Apostles’ or Nicene Creed. The creeds say, with carefully chosen words, “we believe this and not something else,” because the apostolic gospel has been entrusted to the church. Efforts to ditch the creeds for contemporary ideologies misfire. A so called sparkle creed is liturgical malpractice and blatant heresy. The gospel given in Christ is not continually evolving. Those bound to it in baptism will often find not peace but a sword, not unity but division. Christ has already warned that public acknowledgment or denial of him has a future echo before the Father. So the Lord’s word sends the church to get up, go, make disciples, baptize, and teach obedience to Jesus.
