[22:19]Verse 15: “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’”
[22:19]Verse 16: “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,”

[23:40]Observation questions- In verses 12-13, what contrast does Paul make between living according to the flesh and putting to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit? [24:30]
- What words and family relationships does Paul use in verses 14-17 to describe believers: sons, children, adoption, “Abba,” heirs, and fellow heirs?
- According to verses 19-23, what is creation waiting for, and what are both creation and believers doing while they wait? [40:39]
- What does Paul say about present suffering, future glory, unseen hope, and patient waiting in verses 18 and 24-25? [47:44]
Interpretation questions- Paul says good deeds cannot save, yet believers are called to put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit. How can a person pursue real obedience without treating obedience as a way to earn God’s acceptance? [24:49]
- What difference does it make that believers cry, “Abba, Father,” as adopted children rather than approaching God with the fear of slaves who are always trying to avoid punishment? [26:15]
- Paul says God’s children are fellow heirs with Christ and may suffer with Him. How does this truth help a believer understand hardship that comes from faithfully following Jesus? [32:50]
- Paul describes hope as waiting for something not yet seen. What would it look like for a believer’s hope to be rooted in Christ Himself rather than in a particular outcome, relationship, or easier circumstance? [51:11]
Application questions- When you answer the question, “Who are you?” what labels come to mind first—your work, family role, past, personality, successes, or failures? How would it change your week to begin with, “I am a child of God through Christ”? [44:45]
- Is there an area where you have been trying to impress God, make up for sin, or feel secure through being a “good person”? What would it mean to rest more fully in what Christ accomplished on the cross? [25:08]
- Where does fear most often show up in your relationship with God: failure, uncertainty, suffering, unanswered prayer, or feeling like you are not enough? How does adoption speak into that particular fear? [31:08]
- What is one hardship, loss, or disappointment that is difficult to place beside the promise of future glory? Without minimizing the pain, how can the promise of eternity give strength to endure faithfully? [34:16]
- Is there a wait in your life that has made you frustrated with God’s timing? What might patient hope look like in that situation this week while trusting that God is still at work? [42:47]
- Think of someone who is suffering for faithfulness to Christ, whether personally known, in the local church, or among persecuted believers around the world. What is one specific way the group can remember and support them this week? [33:28]
- When life is going well, what tends to pull your attention away from God? When life becomes dark or difficult, what practices help you remember that Jesus is present and walking with you? [51:40]
