From Frat Life to Faith: A Call to Follow

Jesus’ call starts with a simple invitation, but it is not small. The story of a 13-year-old sitting in a Nazarene church parking lot shows how Jesus can use an ordinary moment and an ordinary person to call somebody into his story. The invitation through Joe Gonzalez was not just to youth group. Jesus was reaching through that moment and saying, “follow me.”

Matthew 4 shows Jesus walking by the Sea of Galilee and calling Peter, Andrew, James, and John. The passage shows fishermen doing normal life, making a living, taking care of family, mending nets, and Jesus steps right into that. The call is sharp, “follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Peter and Andrew do not sit around and hesitate. The text says “at once,” and that matters. The nets get left behind because Jesus is worth following immediately.

The story does not stay clean and perfect after that first yes. The pull of the party life, the drive to Lincoln, the need to be liked, and the desire to be “king of the frat” show how a person can try to follow Jesus at church while something else grabs the heart outside of church. The lie says that the life of being known, liked, drunk, high, and free is the life that will finally satisfy. The reality was guilt and shame. The goal was reached, but the soul was not at peace.

God’s mercy breaks into that mess with a sharp conviction, “this was not the plan I had for you.” That voice was not sound in the ears, but a deep cut into the soul. Like Jesus speaking on the banks of Galilee, God called again, and the right response was not delay. The bags got packed, the car got filled, the university got left, and the call to teach God’s word became the real path.

Peter’s story carries the same pattern. Luke 22 shows Peter denying Jesus three times, hearing the rooster crow, and weeping bitterly. John 21 shows Jesus coming back to Peter on the shoreline, filling the net, restoring hope, and asking three times, “do you love me?” Jesus does not leave Peter on the page of failure. Jesus restores him and gives him work, “feed my sheep.” The invitation is not for comfortability. The call is to come back, follow him, and extend that invite to others.
