Acts 9:31 comes after Saul’s radical conversion, after God stepped onto the road to Damascus and said, in effect, “Saul is my man.” The man who had taken strong personal ownership of persecution against the church was intercepted by God and brought onto his team. The churches throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria then had peace, were edified, walked in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, and were multiplied.
The peace in Acts 9:31 is deeper than persecution easing off. The word carries the same kind of depth as Jesus saying, “My peace I give to you.” The church was not necessarily removed from every challenge, but it could now flourish more deeply in knowing Christ, becoming anchored in him, and experiencing that perfect peace that comes from relationship with the Lord.
Edification means being built up, like a house being constructed on strong foundations. The church grew deeper before it grew larger. Every opening of the word, every prayer, every Bible study, every faithful conversation lays another foundation stone. The word becomes like deposits in a bank account, placed there so that when the need arises, there is something real to draw from.
The fear of the Lord is not terror or fear of punishment. The fear of the Lord is awe, reverence, wonder, and deep awareness of God’s holiness. Isaiah 6 gives the picture: Isaiah sees the Lord, cries “woe is me,” and yet God does not leave him condemned. God cleanses him, draws him close, and commissions him, because true fear of the Lord draws a person nearer to God, not further away.
The comfort of the Holy Spirit holds the other side of that beautiful balance. God is holy and reverent, yet he is near. The Spirit comforts, encourages, strengthens, guides, empowers, and comes alongside as helper, advocate, and comforter. The early church held truth and grace together, holiness and mercy together, trembling at his word and resting in his presence.
The multiplication came from that spiritual condition. Acts does not point first to strategy and organization, but to a people walking faithfully with God. The church did not become casual when pressure eased. The church consolidated, built foundations, walked in holy reverence, leaned into the comfort of the Spirit, and then signs, wonders, increase, and multiplication flowed out from that place.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Peace is more than quiet The peace of Acts 9:31 is not just the absence of trouble after persecution slowed down. The peace Christ gives anchors the heart in who he is, even when challenges have not disappeared. The church flourished because peace became a place of deeper knowing, not just a nicer set of circumstances. [72:04]
- 2. Foundations are built by deposits Edification is slow, steady building, like laying a house on a foundation that will not shift. The word, prayer, fellowship, and faithful conversations place deposits into the soul before the day of need arrives. A life with nothing stored up will struggle to draw strength when pressure comes. [75:34]
- 3. Fear draws the heart closer The fear of the Lord is awe, reverence, and wonder before his holiness, not a panic that runs away from him. Isaiah’s “woe is me” did not end in distance, because God cleansed him and commissioned him. True reverence makes obedience a privilege, not a burden. [80:36]
- 4. The Spirit comes alongside The comfort of the Holy Spirit is more than feeling better for a moment. The Spirit strengthens endurance, encourages obedience, guides the believer, and stands near as helper and advocate. God’s holiness does not cancel his nearness, and his nearness does not weaken his holiness. [83:49]
- 5. Multiplication follows depth, not hype Acts 9:31 shows God building deep before building large. The church did not waste the quieter season, but used it to consolidate, be edified, and walk in the fear of the Lord and comfort of the Spirit. Increase came where spiritual foundations were strong and hearts were not casual with God. [92:59]
