Day 4: Breaking Alabaster for Worship
Mary cracked open a year’s wages—spikenard drenched Jesus’ feet. Judas scoffed. She wiped the oil with her hair, ignoring propriety. The scent clung for days, a rebuke to half-hearted devotion. Jesus said, “Wherever the gospel is preached, what she did will be told.” [24:35]
Mary’s worship was costly, uncomfortable, and undignified. She gave what culture said to hoard—her wealth, dignity, and reputation. Jesus immortalized her “waste” as true wisdom.
We often calculate our offerings: “How much is reasonable?” What have you withheld from Christ out of fear of excess? He waits for your “foolish” gift.
“Mary took about a pint of pure nard…poured it on Jesus’ feet…the house was filled with the fragrance.”
(John 12:3, ESV)
Prayer: Offer Jesus something tangible today (money, time, an heirloom).
Challenge: Do one outwardly “excessive” act of worship this hour.
