Be Found Faithful: Living in Christ's Supremacy

Paul’s letter to the Colossians presses hard on the truth that it really does matter what a person believes. Sincerity by itself does not get anybody to God, and Paul would call baloney on the idea that Christian faith, atheism, and everything in between are “all good” as long as somebody means it. Jesus himself says no one comes to the Father except through him, so any other path is not just different, it is dangerous and destructive.

The contrast between little things and ultimate things keeps the weight in the right place. Carpet color, paint choices, pews or chairs, room schedules, and church preferences do not rise to the level of the cross. Jesus did not die for those things. But correct belief about who Christ is matters greatly, because life is to be lived in him, through him, and for him.

Paul points the Colossians to life in Christ, joy in Christ, peace in Christ, hope in Christ, freedom in Christ, fulfillment in Christ, and purpose in Christ. Christ is the image of the invisible God, the one through whom all things were created, the one for whom all things were created, and the one in whom all things hold together. God has rescued his people from the dominion of darkness and brought them into the kingdom of the Son he loves. The cross cancels the debt, nails the charge away, disarms the powers, and makes peace through Christ’s blood.

The warning against hollow and deceptive philosophy stands beside the call to keep living in Christ. Human tradition and fine sounding arguments can sound wise, but they cannot restrain sin or bring fullness. Since believers have died with Christ and been raised with Christ, the old life must be put to death, and the new self must be put on. Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, love, peace, thankfulness, worship, and gracious speech belong to those whose life is hidden with Christ in God.

The names at the end of Colossians become a snapshot of unsung heroes carrying the torch in their day, in their time, in their place. Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Epaphras, Luke, Nympha, Archippus, and others stand as reminders that ordinary faithfulness matters. Those names line the path and seem to say, “It’s your turn now.” The final challenge is not to wait until the end to wonder whether faithfulness marked a life, because the story is being written right now, today, and every day God gives.
