Formed, Filled, and Functioning as Christ’s Body

Paul calls believers the body of Christ, not a pile of disconnected people showing up for a service. The body carries many parts, and the parts that never touch a microphone or stand on a stage are still indispensable. God gives greater honor where honor seems lacking so that division does not take over and every part carries concern for the others.

The body is the container, while Christ is the content. God forms the container, fills it with His life, and gives it a function. Creation shows the pattern: God formed the skies, filled them with sun, moon, and stars, and gave them a job. Adam shows the pattern too: God formed him from dust, filled him with breath, and gave him responsibility over the earth.

Sin brought dysfunction because Adam and Eve stepped outside the function God gave them. Christ broke that curse by being formed, filled with the Spirit, and fully surrendered to the Father’s function. Jesus did not live for His own will, and His obedience opened the way for broken people to be filled with the same Spirit that raised Him from the dead.

The church follows that same pattern. Christ formed the church, filled it at Pentecost with the Holy Spirit, and gave it a function in the world. The Holy Spirit does not fill believers merely for a moment, a feeling, or a Sunday experience. The Spirit gives believers the unction to function as witnesses in a dark and hopeless world.

Acts 2 gives the body its rhythm: proclaim Jesus, make disciples, build community, meet needs, reach people, and fight for unity. The church cannot put all that work on a few visible leaders, because a body malfunctions when its parts refuse to function. Discipleship grows through devotion and proximity, as believers choose to get around people who are further down the road and carry something worth catching.

The church becomes dysfunctional when it makes itself the center, expects to be entertained, or leaves evangelism to somebody else. The body exists to glorify Jesus and carry His hands and feet beyond the four walls Monday through Saturday. Repentance keeps the body clear, because undealt-with sin, pride, distraction, and misplaced attention can hinder the Spirit’s work. The Spirit also calls for regular filling, because yesterday’s fuel will not carry a believer through today’s assignment.
