Psalm 12 opens with a cry that feels way too close to home: “Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone.” The Psalmist is not looking around for more religious people. The Psalmist is grieving that faithful people have vanished, people whose mouths say one thing while their hearts live somewhere else.
The image of a “double heart” exposes the problem. One heart says what people want to hear, while the other heart holds onto private intentions and does whatever it wants. The Shema calls God’s people to love Him with all their heart, not with one heart for church and another heart for the rest of the week. Faithfulness does not mean perfection. Faithfulness means letting God form and shape a life day after day, year after year.
Words become the place where that formation gets exposed. The tongue can flatter, boast, gossip, rage, manipulate, and declare, “Who is master over us?” That question gets right to the heart of it: who owns the mouth? Speech reveals allegiance. Anger can own a mouth. Power can own a mouth. The need to feel important can own a mouth. But Jesus says that out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.
God answers the lies and double hearts of Psalm 12 with words that are pure, true, and refined like silver seven times over. God’s words do not shift based on what benefits Him in the moment. God’s words give safety to the poor, the needy, and the groaning. God’s people need those pure words in their hearts because careless words can bring death into marriages, homes, friendships, workplaces, and churches.
Christ stands in complete contrast to the divided people in Psalm 12. Isaiah says no deceit was found in His mouth. Jesus says He is the truth, the way, and the life. Jesus says no one can serve two masters. Spiritual formation cannot happen without Jesus, because only His faithful words produce faithful people.
The faithful life does not leave Jesus in a church building. The faithful life carries His name into lunch, work, school, family conflict, and every conversation. The student standing alone at a flagpole pictures the kind of boldness God forms: not better than anyone else, but different. Jesus on the lips must become Jesus in the life.
Key Takeaways
- 1. A double heart cannot stay hidden The double heart speaks the language of faith while quietly protecting private control. God is not asking for religious performance in one setting and freedom from Him everywhere else. He calls for the whole heart, including the places most easily excused, concealed, or defended. [40:05]
- 2. Speech reveals what rules the heart Angry words can reveal allegiance to anger, while shouting can reveal allegiance to power. Gossip often reveals a desire to gain value through somebody else’s failure. The mouth does not merely create problems; it exposes what has already been welcomed into the heart. [49:53]
- 3. God’s words are pure and reliable Human words can be flattering, careless, self-serving, and destructive. God’s words are refined like silver, completely true and trustworthy. A life shaped by Scripture gains something solid enough to resist the lies of a broken world. [54:23]
- 4. Faithfulness is not the same as perfection Christ does not call His people to pretend they have arrived. Christ forms people over time, correcting, convicting, and reshaping them into something different. The evidence of formation is not a flawless life but a life that increasingly belongs to Him. [43:12]
- 5. Jesus must be carried into Monday Church songs become careless when Christ’s name stays only in a worship gathering. Every workplace, classroom, restaurant, home, and conversation becomes a place of mission. Jesus on the lips becomes believable when Jesus is visible in the life. [56:47]
