Welcome To Church: The Forgiving Father

Jesus meets people at the point where hope feels gone. Mark 1 shows a day that starts with Jesus teaching in the synagogue, casting out a demon, healing Peter’s mother-in-law, and then receiving the sick and demon-possessed from all over Capernaum. Jesus gives hope back to the hopeless one person at a time, for hours and hours, until evening turns into night. Jesus knows what it is to pour out, to be exhausted, hungry, emotionally overwhelmed, and physically weak.

Jesus does not pretend that strength comes from having endless energy. The Gospels show his vulnerability, even as they show his faithfulness. Mark tells the crucial part of the story the next morning: while it was still dark, Jesus gets up, goes to a solitary place, and prays. Jesus goes to his Father when he has nothing left to give. The relationship with the Father is not an item left at the end of a busy day. The relationship is the resource for every part of the day.

Hope cannot be manufactured by trying harder or by finding the perfect answer. First Peter calls believers to be prepared to give a reason for the hope they have, but prepared does not mean rehearsed. Hope does not require a memorized presentation, a list of verses, or five points ready to rattle off. Prayer prepares a person to receive what God gives in the moment: sometimes words to say, sometimes ears to listen, and sometimes the capacity simply to be present.

Jesus shows that sharing faith begins with letting the Lord be the source of hope, joy, wisdom, and strength. The BLESS way of life grows out of that source: praying, listening to understand rather than waiting to talk, eating intentionally for the sake of people, serving where others may not serve, and sharing the story of God’s faithfulness. Being a blessing is more than doing something kind. The gift is that another person might come to know Jesus and find hope in him personally.

The call is to identify one person from everyday life and commit to praying for that person daily. Prayer removes the pressure for forced conversations and makes room for the Lord to lead and guide. Jesus does not waver or falter when people reach zero. His presence remains steady in grief, in questions, and in the hardest moments.
