David’s prayer in Psalm 51:13-17 shows what forgiveness ought to do in a life. David has sinned, knows the weight of it, and knows that only God can restore him. David does not ask for a clean heart just so he can feel better. David says that when God restores him, he will teach transgressors God’s ways, and sinners will be converted to Him.
Forgiveness leads to sharing because forgiven people know what it feels like to be separated from God. Sin separates every person from God, and sinners must understand that they cannot forgive their own sins before they can understand their need for a Savior. David’s gratitude does not stop with himself. David wants other transgressors to find the forgiveness, peace, and close walk with God that he has found.
Forgiveness also leads to worship. David asks God to deliver him from the guilt of bloodshed because his sin against Uriah still burdens him. Guilt can ruin a life, but God can take away guilt when sin is honestly confessed to the One who has been offended. David’s tongue then sings aloud of God’s righteousness, and his mouth shows forth God’s praise. God’s salvation, righteousness, grace, and work through the years give His people plenty of reason to sing.
David also makes clear that God is not looking for casual sacrifice. Sacrifices in the Old Testament were meant to show that sin causes death. A person could not bring a lamb and act like sin was no big deal, planning to bring another offering later. David’s words, “I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which cost me nothing,” show that God wants more than an easy religious transaction.
A broken spirit and a broken, contrite heart are the sacrifices God will not despise. Christ became the ultimate and perfect sacrifice for sin, so no lamb must be brought again. Christ’s sacrifice, however, must never make sin casual. Sin should break the heart because sin put Christ on the cross. God’s forgiveness should lead to sharing, worship, and a heart that hates the sin for which Jesus died.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Forgiveness should lead to sharing David does not keep God’s restoration to himself. Forgiveness creates a desire for other transgressors to find the same mercy and peace with God. Selfishness says, “I’m saved, I’m good,” but grace turns forgiven sinners into witnesses. God’s forgiveness should make His people want others to know Him too. [41:11]
- 2. Worship starts with remembering grace David sings aloud of God’s righteousness because God has dealt with his guilt. God’s people do not need manufactured excitement when they remember salvation, mercy, the cross, and God’s faithfulness through their lives. Worship is not a place filler before anything else happens. Worship is a right response to what God has done. [47:51]
- 3. Sin cannot be treated casually David rejects the idea of offering God something that costs nothing. Old Testament sacrifice showed that sin caused death, and the sacrifice was meant to make that truth hurt. Casual confession often reveals a heart that wants relief from guilt more than it wants to turn from sin. God wants sin to matter deeply enough to change the heart and behavior. [59:09]
- 4. Christ’s sacrifice should break hearts Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for sins once for all. Christ’s finished work does not give permission to shrug at sin and promise to confess it later. Every sin should remind the believer that Jesus gave His life to pay that penalty. A broken spirit sees sin not merely as a mistake, but as something that cost Christ His life.
