Sermon Summary

Exodus gives the old, unforgettable picture of God whooping up on the Egyptians, with Israel trapped between Pharaoh’s chariots and the sea. Pharaoh trusts his many gods and his superior numbers, while Israel can see nothing but water ahead and death behind. God places the pillar of cloud and fire between the two camps, parts the sea, and leads his people across on dry land. The Red Sea becomes “the sea at the end of the world,” because Israel cannot see what lies on the other side, yet God is taking them somewhere by his power.

The Talmud adds a hard word to Israel’s great celebration. God stops the angels from rejoicing over Egypt’s destruction because no destruction of creatures God loves is finally a cause for celebration. God’s victory over evil does not make God careless about the people caught up in it. That word puts a caveat on the childhood thrill of finding Egyptian chariot wheels on the beach. Jesus presses the matter further through Peter’s question about forgiveness. Jesus answers not with a tidy limit but with seventy times seven, meaning a whole lot. The parable of the unforgiving servant puts an enormous debt beside a very small one: the master forgives ten thousand talents, while the servant refuses to forgive a fellow slave even one denarius.
