"Here is Joseph face to face with his family that had put him in jail. jail but we talked last week that guilt had already started to land on the brothers that that they they knew they felt they understood they they got a sense of the guilt that that was there but that we learned that God uses guilt in a godly way to restore us to him not to bring us to condemnation but instead to look to him for forgiveness to look to him for grace but there is something that comes from when we come to God and that we need to give to each other and that's forgiveness forgiveness is something that brings peace to our lives throughout this text we see the word peace now it's written not in there uh uh exactly in that way and it says may you be well peace be among you mercy these are all variations of the Hebrew word of peace in this God is saying to us that forgiveness gives us peace that peace can come into our troubled lives our our troubled families our troubled hearts it is that forgiveness that extends to us and can bring us peace and it is in that peace of Christ that we can bring peace to our lives and it is in that peace of Christ that we can bring We receive forgiveness. Maybe you're here today knowing that you need peace in your life. Maybe you need forgiveness from God himself."

"Maybe you are torn up because you know you need peace. Maybe you need forgiveness from someone else. Or maybe, maybe you're tortured inside because you need to extend peace to someone else through forgiveness. Friends, the text here this morning helps us to see how peace comes through forgiveness. How it is received, how it is a gift, and how we should extend it to others. Do you need peace today? Do you need to extend peace to someone else? In this passage, there are three ways peace comes through repentance and forgiveness. Three ways peace comes through repentance and forgiveness. First, if you're taking notes, peace is initiated through repentance. Peace is initiated through repentance."

"When we desire forgiveness, it must be through genuine desire. To change and be more like Christ. To acknowledge our sin and desire a forgiveness that comes from God and a forgiveness that comes from the people that we hurt. When we look at Joseph's brother's journey back, we see repentance beginning to unfold in small and significant ways."

"Friends, if we want forgiveness, we need to take that first step of acknowledging that we're wrong. That we're sinful. That what we are doing is not right before God. And right before others. The first layer is sort of like peeling an onion. You know, I've tried every trick. You know, some of you have had my trick. You've searched the internet, putting stuff under your eyes, doing all sorts of different things. But as soon as you cut into that onion, oh man, those eyes are burning. And you're crying. And it's not because, you know, some Disney song is playing in the background at my house. I'm not crying about that. It's the onion or something. It's the onion or something in there."

"If we expect ourselves and others to find forgiveness, we need to pray and seek change. We need to acknowledge. We need to acknowledge our sin and seek repentance. We need to understand that repentance and peace only comes through repentance. Like Joseph's brother, we often find that peace only comes through layers of repentance. And the first layer has to be repenting to God."

"Friends, receiving forgiveness is receiving a peace that passes all understanding. When you receive forgiveness, it changes you. Your countenance is different. The weight of your life is different. Forgiveness is a freeing thing that is life -changing. When Joseph's brothers decided to return to Egypt, their father's benediction was this. May God Almighty grant you mercy or peace before this man."

"Friends, we cannot sit here and see that if we truly need forgiveness, the only answer for that forgiveness, the only place to find that forgiveness, the only source for forgiveness, the only lasting forgiveness, comes from God through His Son, Jesus Christ. That this payment for our sins, comes from God Himself."

"Friends, we need to pray for God's strength to grant forgiveness. Some, we might have to grant forgiveness and it will be costly. But friends, look at what we've learned. Joseph was willing to take the punishment. Joseph was willing to pay for the sins of his brother. Joseph was willing to stand for his brothers. Friends, forgiveness is costly."

"Friends, may we respond and may we be the bringers of peace by forgiveness. Let us pray. Father, thank you so much for this example in scripture that we might grow in forgiveness and receiving forgiveness. And I pray, Lord, right now if there's someone that does not know you and know your peace, I pray right now they would pray and receive the mercy that is available through your son, Jesus."
