"Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.' Now Christ remember had been beaten, he had been scourged, he had been mocked, a crown of thorns had been woven it had been placed, forced down on his head he had been dragged after initially carrying the beam of the cross he was then dragged to the place of execution, and now the soldiers go about this grisly work of nailing him to the cross and notice what Jesus says at this point, he says they know not what they do." [00:02:30]

"Is this not striking here are men nailing the son of god to the cross and they have no idea that they are doing anything wrong, they don't have a bad conscience, they don't feel that they need to be forgiven, they are committing the greatest sin in the history of the world and Jesus says they do not know what they are doing." [00:03:07]

"Jesus loved them while they were still sinning against him. Jesus loved them while they were still sinning against him. Jesus says and this is one of his best known statements in terms of one that's repeated from the gospels Jesus said love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you and that is exactly what our lord Jesus Christ himself is doing here." [00:04:46]

"Christians should be the most compassionate people in the world because if we know the hell that sin brings and the heaven that sin spurns, well knowing that will produce within our hearts surely of all people compassion for sinners is there someone who you need to forgive knowing what sin is and knowing what sin does will help you to grow in compassion." [00:05:27]

"Jesus prayed for them when they had no interest in praying for themselves these men are not repentant these are not men who have faith they are on the path to hell and they are so dead in their sins that they do not even know what they are doing but Christ prays for them this is marvelous Christ prays for us when we are dead in our trespasses and sins he prays for us before we pray to him." [00:06:10]

"Jesus builds a bridge of forgiveness over which his tormentors could come in penitence to the father in this prayer Jesus builds a bridge of forgiveness in which his tormentors could come in penitence to the father now at this point you may say how is this possible how is it possible for God to forgive the worst sins and to embrace the worst of sinners." [00:07:13]

"Jesus is the sacrifice for our sins he comes as the one who isolates himself under the judgment of God he says let it come on me not on them and in this way he creates room for us to be reconciled to him he calls on the father to divert the punishment away from the sinners who are nailing him to the cross and he absorbs it in himself." [00:11:16]

"Now Luke tells us that there were two criminals who were crucified with Jesus one on his right and the other on his left verse 32. and verse 39 one of the criminals who were hanged railed against Jesus saying are you not the Christ save yourself and us now here is a man think about this in the last hours of his life he is completely lost he is completely helpless and he is raging in anger towards God." [00:12:39]

"Notice he begins to fear God verse 40 do you not fear God he says to his friend he recognizes his sinful condition we are receiving the due reward for our deeds verse 41 he believes in the Lord Jesus Christ he recognizes him as a king Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom he had heard Jesus say when he was being nailed to the cross father forgive them." [00:16:21]

"Now this is very clear heaven does not depend on what you do for Jesus it depends on what Jesus Christ has done for you and the New Testament makes this wonderfully and repeatedly clear let me give you three examples in Galatians chapter 2 and verse 16 a person is not justified by works of the law but how through faith in Jesus Christ." [00:18:47]

"Jesus bore our sins on the cross Peter puts it this way he bore our sins in his body on the tree Paul says it this way God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us Isaiah puts it this way the Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all in the darkness the guilt of our sin was counted as imputed to our Lord Jesus Christ." [00:23:06]

"Jesus endured our hell the divine wrath was spent on him in regards to the sins of all who believe in him the justice of God was satisfied in him right there in the darkness on the cross the perfect sacrifice was offered a complete atonement was made and when it was done Jesus said in triumph father into your hands I commit my spirit."
