Bible ReadingMark 2:1–121. “And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.”
[34:52]2. “And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.”
[35:15]3. “And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.”
[35:27]4. “And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.”
[35:46]5. “And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’”
[37:23]6. “Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,”
[38:03]7. “‘Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?’”
[38:48]8. “And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, ‘Why do you question these things in your hearts?’”
[38:54]9. “‘Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Rise, take up your bed and walk”?’”
[39:01]10. “‘But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’—he said to the paralytic—”
[39:09]11. “‘I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.’”
[39:18]12. “And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, ‘We never saw anything like this!’”
[39:22]Proverbs 27:17“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
James 5:16“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
Galatians 6:2“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
Observation questions- What obstacles kept the paralyzed man from getting to Jesus, and what did the four men do rather than leaving him outside? [35:27]
- What did Jesus say to the man first, before telling him to rise and walk? Why would that order have stood out to everyone in the room? [40:15]
- What did the scribes believe about forgiveness, and how did Jesus respond to their unspoken questions? [38:48]
- What actions did the healed man take after Jesus spoke to him, and how did the crowd respond? [39:18]
Interpretation questions- Jesus saw “their faith” when the man was brought through the roof. What does this show about the way faith can be expressed through people acting together for someone in need? [51:46]
- Jesus addressed the man’s sin before his paralysis. How does this shape the way a believer should view real struggles such as health problems, money pressure, relationship pain, or fear?
- The four men could carry their friend to Jesus, but they could not forgive him. What is the difference between helping carry another person’s burden and trying to become that person’s savior? [53:20]
- James 5:16 connects confession, prayer, and healing. Why might honest confession to trusted believers feel difficult, and why is humility necessary for receiving grace? [50:50]
Application questions- Where does life currently feel stuck—emotionally, relationally, financially, physically, spiritually, or in another area? What would it look like to tell one trusted person what is being carried instead of trying to handle it alone? [01:00:28]
- Is there a burden, sin, failure, or fear that has been kept hidden because asking for help feels embarrassing? What is one small, honest step toward “riding the humble bus” this week? [45:06]
- Jesus offers forgiveness before anything else. Has there been a tendency to focus more on asking Jesus to fix a circumstance than on receiving his forgiveness and surrendering again to him? What would admitting, believing, and committing look like in that situation? [42:28]
- Who may need someone to pick up a corner of their mat right now? What practical act of presence could help carry that person toward Jesus—listening, praying, checking in, offering a ride, helping with a need, or inviting them into community? [57:07]
- Is there a group, relationship, or church setting that has been avoided because past hurt or disappointment makes isolation feel safer? What could “get up, pick up your mat, and go” look like in one specific next step? [59:06]
- When someone shares a burden, is the usual instinct to fix the problem quickly, give advice, or make the situation about personal ability? How can the group better point one another to Jesus, the One who alone forgives and saves? [54:52]
- What is one “yes” to community that could be made this week—showing up, asking for prayer, joining a group, sending a text, or inviting someone into an honest conversation? [55:51]
