Psalm 32 puts joy and forgiveness together because grace is never going to look as amazing as it truly is until sin is recognized as the big deal it is. Scripture’s whole counsel includes sin, judgment, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and the patience of God, because removing sin from the picture also removes the urgency and beauty of Calvary. God’s infinite holiness cannot simply shrug at sin, yet God’s unfathomable love provided what sinners could never provide for themselves.

David begins with the end in mind: “How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven.” The blessed man is not a man with a spotless spiritual resume or a man who has never fallen. The blessed man is the one “in whose spirit there is no deceit,” the one who quits playing spiritual impostor and quits saying, in effect, “I can do it myself.” Sin cannot be repaired by a DIY spiritual approach. A person may call himself good enough or say, “The Lord knows my heart,” but God does know the heart, including its obstinance and its refusal to submit.

David’s silence shows what the soul was not made to carry. His body wastes away, his groaning continues all day, his vitality dries up like the fever heat of summer, because a spiritual being made in God’s image cannot sustain rebellion without consequence. God’s heavy hand may not feel good, but that heaviness is a marvelous thing. A conscience that still feels the weight of sin has not been abandoned to its own way. God’s hand is better than a conscience that has gone past feeling.

David’s confession turns the burden toward the only place it can be dealt with: “I acknowledged my sin to You.” Personal responsibility cannot be outsourced. Prayers offered by people who love someone deeply cannot acknowledge another person’s sin for them. David acknowledges, refuses to hide his iniquity, confesses his transgressions, and God forgives the guilt of his sin.

God becomes the hiding place for the one who stops hiding from God. The hiding place does not diminish sin; self-reliance diminishes sin by pretending it can be handled without the Lord. God gives the guilty a place to put their sin, preserves them from trouble, and surrounds them with songs of deliverance. The joy of forgiveness is not earned. The joy comes through the grace of God when a burdened soul takes on the truth about sin, turns personally to God, and receives the release Christ has made possible.
