John 16 drops readers into a real, heavy night. Eleven men sit with Jesus after three years of leaving everything behind, watching the sick healed, the dead raised, and thousands fed. Jesus has told them he is going away, and sorrow has filled their hearts. The disciples are not idiots. They know Jerusalem is dangerous, they know the leaders hate Jesus, and they know the news of his leaving feels like the worst news possible.
Jesus, however, says something that sounds backwards: “It is to your advantage that I go away.” Christ’s return to the Father means the Helper will come. The Holy Spirit does not merely show up as a consolation prize after Jesus leaves. The Spirit marks the arrival of the kingdom age, when salvation goes from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth, without regard to race, nationality, status, or gender. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
The Spirit works for the good of the church and the glory of Christ. The Spirit takes what belongs to Christ, namely his finished work of salvation, and declares it to the world. The church’s work is therefore never merely human effort, strategy, or survival. The work of the people of God is the work of the Spirit of God.
The Spirit also convicts the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. Sin names humanity’s refusal to believe Jesus. Righteousness reveals that Jesus alone meets God’s standard and that his cross gives his righteousness to those who cannot achieve it themselves. Judgment exposes the ruler of this world and his profoundly wrong, morally perverse verdicts about good and evil. Christ’s cross begins the end of Satan, while Christ’s return will bring his final defeat.
The Spirit’s conviction also gives believers assurance. Conviction that produces mourning over sin, repentance, and a turning toward Christ is not evidence of abandonment. God disciplines those he loves, and the Spirit’s active work reveals that believers have been sealed and are being conformed to Christ.
Jesus finally promises that the Spirit of truth will ground the church in truth. The Spirit guides the apostles as they preach, write Scripture, settle theological questions, and build Christ’s church. The Spirit still leads God’s people through the Scriptures, especially as the world tries to redefine or ignore truth. Christchurch’s future rests not in having everything figured out, but in clinging to Scripture and following the Spirit. The same Spirit who fell on frightened disciples and turned the world upside down can establish deep roots, save the lost, and do more than this young church can yet imagine.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus’ departure was the church’s good. Christ’s ascension did not leave his people with less of God’s presence. The Helper came so that Christ’s saving reign would spread beyond one place and one people. The Spirit makes the risen Christ known among every tribe, nation, and tongue. [15:03]
- 2. Conviction can strengthen assurance. The Spirit’s conviction hurts because sin is real, but godly sorrow is not the same thing as condemnation. Repentance shows that God has not left his children alone in their sin. The Father’s discipline is evidence of his love and of the Spirit’s active presence. [21:46]
- 3. Christ alone defines true righteousness. Jesus is not merely an example that sinners should try harder to copy. He is the only righteous one, the standard nobody can meet and the Savior who gives his righteousness through the cross. The Spirit then forms Christlike lives that make the gospel visible before others. [23:56]
- 4. The world’s judgment is not final. Satan’s verdicts about right and wrong are profoundly wrong and morally perverse. Christ’s cross has already begun Satan’s defeat, even while the world continues to follow his lies. The Spirit frees people from that bondage and brings them into God’s family. [27:04]
- 5. The Spirit grounds the church in truth. The church cannot survive by chasing whatever the world calls true this year. The Spirit of truth leads God’s people through the Scriptures, the faith once delivered to the saints. Deep roots come through clinging to God’s Word and trusting his Spirit.
