Following the Lamb: Vindication, Judgment, and Hope

Revelation 6 through the beginning of 8 brings the heavenly vision of chapters 4 and 5 back down to earth, where the Lamb reigns while the world still feels deeply broken. The churches in Asia Minor knew that tension firsthand: they were weak, suffering, compromised, and getting worked over by the powers that be. Christ calls them to overcome, to hold fast to faithful witness, and to remember that God is not anxious, frenetic, or scrambling to problem solve. God rests in glorious might, and the Lamb holds the scroll because history is moving toward God’s redemptive purpose.

The four horsemen reveal the regular realities of a sin sick world: conquering empires that look like Jesus but are not Jesus, war, famine and economic inflation, and finally death. These powers are given authority, which means they do not sit outside God’s rule, even though God cannot be blamed as though he delights in war or suffering. Human rebellion has opened the door to life without God’s good rule, and these realities stand as evidence that things are not as they should be. The pain of the world should drive human eyes upward, toward the throne and toward the desperate need for God to make all things right.

The fifth seal gives language to suffering saints: “How long, O Lord?” God promises that he will vindicate his people, but he tells them to rest a little longer. God’s waiting is not slowness. God waits because he is patient, not wishing that any should perish, but desiring that more would come to repentance. The Lamb conquers through sacrificial death, and God’s people conquer in the same way, through faithful witness even unto death.

The sixth seal shows the great day of judgment, a day of decreation when every false refuge collapses. Idolatry responds to God’s wrath by crying out to creation for salvation rather than crying out to God. The very things that promise life become the things people ask to destroy them. The question rises from the ruins: “Who can stand?”

Revelation 7 answers with a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the throne. God gets his people home. The redeemed stand because their robes have been washed white in the blood of the Lamb, because they have gone all in on Christ as their only hope in life and death. The Lamb becomes their shepherd, leads them to springs of living water, ends their hunger and thirst, shelters them with God’s presence, and brings them to the day when God wipes away every tear.
