Day 1: Holding onto Planks in a Shipwrecked Life

When storms shatter our carefully built plans, we cling to fragments of what we thought would carry us. Paul’s ship disintegrated, yet God used broken timbers to bring survivors safely ashore. Our crises often feel like sinking, but God’s faithfulness becomes the debris we grab onto—the unexpected grace that keeps us afloat. What we label as ruin, God repurposes as rescue. The mission outlives the vessel. [45:10]

Day 2: Ministry in the Unscheduled Malta

Detours become destinations when God is at work. Paul never planned to preach on Malta, yet healings and conversions erupted amid shipwreck aftermath. Our unmet expectations—job delays, health crises, relational fractures—often host divine appointments. God’s itinerary includes island stops where His power shines through our unpreparedness. “Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and put it on the fire. A viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.”

The sailors’ despair grew when storms hid the stars—their ancient GPS. Paul’s assurance didn’t calm the waves but anchored weary hearts to God’s promise: “You will stand before Caesar.” Faith isn’t denying the storm’s fury but trusting the Navigator when all markers vanish. [41:30]

Day 4: The Gospel Advances Without Hindrance

Chains bound Paul in Rome, yet Luke concludes Acts with the gospel spreading “without hindrance.” Our limitations—failed programs, staffing shortages, personal weaknesses—don’t limit God’s kingdom. The message thrives in prisons, hospital rooms, and ordinary kitchens where surrendered people testify. [55:08]

Day 5: Broken Plans, Unbroken Mission

The original ship sank, but the mission floated ashore. God rerouted Paul through storms and snakebites to fulfill His promise. Our shattered dreams—careers derailed, relationships fractured, health failed—don’t void God’s purpose. His plans outmaneuver our shipwrecks, making wreckage a witness. [58:38]

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Sermon Summary

Luke brings Paul’s journey to its hardest stretch in Acts 27 and 28. Paul has already seen God change his direction before, from persecuting Christians to following Jesus, and from wanting Asia to being sent into Macedonia. God has now promised Paul that he will testify before Caesar, but the route to Rome looks nothing like a simple trip with Google Maps plugged in.

The storm in Acts 27 becomes so bad that experienced sailors give up all hope of being saved. The sun and stars disappear, the cargo goes overboard, and 276 people face what looks like certain death. Paul stands in the middle of that chaos and says that the ship will be lost, but no life will be lost. God does not promise an easy sunrise, a safe ship, or a quick fix. God promises that Paul will still stand before Caesar.

Faith, then, does not pretend the storm is not real. Faith says, “Man, this stinks. It’s gonna be bad, but God will get me through it.” The ship can break without God’s mission breaking. The plan can fall apart without God abandoning the purpose. Paul and the others finally reach shore by swimming or hanging onto planks from the broken ship. The ship did not make it, but they did.

Malta becomes an unscheduled stop Paul never would have put on his itinerary. Yet God uses that detour for real ministry. Paul survives a snake bite, prays for Publius’s father, and sees people healed. Malta delays Rome, but it does not cancel Rome. God does not wait until every circumstance is fixed before using His people.

The church has seen that truth in seasons when staffing, plans, and expectations did not work out as hoped. God has still brought people to Jesus, raised up leaders, cared for hurting people, and opened doors for ministry. The gospel does not need everything perfectly in place before it moves. The church is not just pastoral staff. The saints are equipped for ministry, and God works through ordinary people in the middle of the crazy.

Luke ends Acts with Paul finally arriving in Rome as a prisoner, guarded by soldiers, yet proclaiming the kingdom of God “without hindrance.” Paul is chained, but the gospel is unhindered. Persecution, closed doors, prison, storms, shipwrecks, and delays cannot stop God’s purposes. A broken plan is not necessarily a broken purpose, and an unexpected destination is not necessarily a wasted season.

“Remember, all the problems that Luke had or, I mean, Paul had. Couldn't go to Asia. He he he got blinded. He got shipwrecked. Luke says, without hindrance, Paul is literally under guard. But Luke says, Paul was without hindrance. And Luke says the gospel was unhindered. Think about that irony. Paul was shipwrecked, Paul was chained, and the gospel keeps going without problem. Paul can be delayed. We can be delayed. We can go through trials, but the gospel will continue. And sometimes, our biggest gospel witness is in the middle of our trials.”
