Bible ReadingMatthew 26:26-28 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
[30:52] [30:56] [31:00] Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
[31:07] [31:10]1 Corinthians 11:23-26 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,
[44:14] and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
[44:19] [44:28] In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
[44:32] [44:39] For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
[44:44] [44:50]John 6:47-51 “Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life.”
[33:48] [33:52] “Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.”
[33:55] [34:01] “But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.”
[34:16] “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
[34:22] “This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
[34:29]1 Corinthians 11:27-29 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
[46:52] Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.
[47:04] For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of the Lord eat and drink judgment on themselves.
[47:14]John 13:12-15 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.
[01:01:12] [01:01:15] “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.”
[01:01:20] “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.”
[01:01:25] “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
[01:01:32]Observation questions- In Matthew 26, what does Jesus tell the disciples to do with the bread and the cup, and what does He say they represent? [30:52]
- In John 6, what contrast does Jesus make between manna in the wilderness and Himself as the bread from heaven? [34:49]
- What specific problems in the Corinthian church made Paul say that their meetings were doing “more harm than good”? [41:49]
- According to John 13, what did Jesus do after the meal, and what example did He say He had set for His disciples? [01:01:25]
Interpretation questions- Jesus calls the cup “the new covenant in my blood.” How does this change the meaning of Passover from remembering deliverance out of Egypt to trusting Christ for forgiveness and life? [45:06]
- Jesus says, “Take and eat,” rather than simply “take.” What is the difference between knowing facts about Jesus, doing religious activities, and personally receiving Him by faith? [38:16]
- Paul connects communion with the way believers treat one another. Why would division, selfishness, or humiliating people in need contradict what the Lord’s Table proclaims? [42:21]
- Paul calls believers to examine themselves, yet Christ removes condemnation from His children. How can honest repentance and confidence in Christ’s cleansing belong together? [48:36]
Application questions- Is there an area where you have been trying to earn God’s love through effort, guilt, or religious routine? What would it look like this week to rest in what Jesus has already done through His body and blood? [35:33]
- Jesus offers Himself personally; nobody is filled up because another person is eating. Are you depending on someone else’s faith—family, friends, church attendance, or a group—to carry your relationship with Jesus? What personal step would help you take Him in rather than merely stay near Him? [40:22]
- Before coming to the Lord’s Table, believers are called to examine their hearts. Is the Holy Spirit bringing to mind a sin to surrender, a habit to cut out, or a relationship that needs attention? What is one faithful next step you can take? [49:05]
- Is there guilt or shame you continue to carry even though Jesus has paid for your sin? How can you remind yourself of the difference between the Spirit’s loving conviction and condemnation that pushes you away from God? [49:17]
- Where might selfishness, frustration, preference, or distance be affecting the way you treat other believers? What could unity and practical care look like in this group or church family this week? [43:36]
- Jesus knew where He came from and where He was going, and that security freed Him to wash feet. What is one humble act of service you could offer without needing recognition, control, or repayment? [01:00:30]
- Jesus says that His followers will be recognized by their love for one another. Who is one person who needs to see Christ’s love through your words, forgiveness, help, or presence this week? [01:03:05]
