Care Portal stands as a practical doorway for churches in Onondaga County to get face to face with real need. The work has already helped more than 75 children, and about 150 people when their families are counted, with roughly $30,000 of economic benefit. The delivery matters because a bed, a table, school clothes, cleaning supplies, or furniture can make a home safer and healthier. The deeper thing, though, is that the Spirit of God shows up in God’s people when they show up at the door.
The need does not always turn into a sweet relationship. Trauma can make love hard to trust, and sometimes a family can only receive items through the door. Prayer still remains. Sometimes prayer happens in the home, sometimes on the porch, but the light of Christ still gets carried into places that too often know darkness.
The call behind all of this is bigger than making deliveries. The call is to be like Christ. Being like Christ does not mean sharing his divine nature, and it does not mean becoming sinless in the way only Jesus is sinless. Being like Christ means growing into his character: love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.
Scripture refuses to let belief sit still. John says whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. Romans says God’s people are predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son. Hebrews says the foundation is not the whole house. A builder who keeps building the foundation for twenty years never gets to the walls or the roof.
The human heart cannot produce this on its own. Jeremiah calls the heart deceitful and unable to be cured. But God can do what the human heart cannot do. The Spirit lives in believers because the assignment is impossible without him.
Abiding in Christ becomes the way transformation starts. The branch receives life from the vine, and the believer who remains close to Jesus begins to lose old appetites and gain new desires. The world may not understand the change, and the believer may not fully understand it either, but once that transformation is tasted, there is no going back.
The way forward is believe, follow, be like. Jesus told disciples, “follow me,” long before they understood everything. Belief that stops at secured salvation can become a stalled life. Christ’s yoke is not another burden. His yoke is easy, his burden is light, and devotion to him is where rest is found.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Compassion becomes holy proximity Care Portal makes mercy concrete, not theoretical. A delivery places Christ’s people in front of a family whose need is specific, serious, and often heavy with trauma. The gift may be furniture or school supplies, but the deeper gift is the presence of God’s Spirit showing up with kindness where darkness has been normal. [28:08]
- 2. Belief must keep moving The Christian life is not meant to stop at forgiveness, mercy, and a secured future. Scripture presses belief forward into following Jesus and becoming like him. A foundation matters deeply, but a foundation alone is not the house God intends to build. [37:24]
- 3. The Spirit replaces the heart The deceitful heart can convince a decent person that nothing serious needs to change. God’s mirror exposes selfishness, comfort hunger, and the inability to deny oneself for another. The hope is not that the old heart improves itself, but that the Spirit manifests Christ’s life where self used to rule. [47:35]
- 4. Abiding reshapes desire The branch does not manufacture life apart from the vine. Staying close to Jesus slowly changes appetite, attention, and desire without the believer being able to take credit for the change. Transformation begins to look strange to the world because Christ himself was not recognized by the world. [42:48]
- 5. Christ’s yoke gives rest Following Jesus and becoming like him is not another religious weight added to an already tired soul. Christ calls the weary to come, learn, and take up his yoke because his way is where rest is actually found. The call is strong, but the burden is light because Christ carries what human strength cannot. [58:15]
