Flourishing Discipleship: Grafting, Beauty, and Intentionality

Summary

In this gathering, we explored the profound themes of discipleship, beauty, and intentionality, drawing inspiration from John 15, where Jesus describes Himself as the vine and us as the branches. This imagery of grafting, where a branch is reconnected to the vine to receive life, serves as a powerful metaphor for our spiritual journey. Jesus invites us to be grafted into Him, the True Vine, to experience life in its fullness. This connection is not just about survival but flourishing, as His life flows into us, enabling us to bear much fruit.

The essence of discipleship is not merely about acquiring knowledge or adhering to doctrines but about embodying the beauty of Christ's love. In a world inundated with information, the next generation is drawn to authenticity and transformation. They seek lives that resonate with the love and peace of Christ, compelling them to ask deeper questions about faith and purpose. This is why beauty must be at the forefront of our discipleship efforts. When we live lives that reflect the love of Christ, we become magnetic, drawing others to Him.

Intentionality is equally crucial. Discipleship is not accidental; it requires deliberate effort and commitment. Jesus' mandate to make disciples of all nations is a call to action. We must be intentional in mentoring and nurturing the next generation, recognizing them as precious gifts entrusted to us by God. This involves planting seeds of faith and love, even if we may never see the full harvest. Our role is to prepare and empower them to carry on the work of the Kingdom.

As we reflect on these themes, we are reminded of the importance of community and mentorship. Just as we have been blessed by those who have gone before us, we are called to invest in the lives of others, passing on the torch of faith. This is a vision of selfless love, where we give ourselves to the work of building up the next generation, ensuring that the Kingdom of God continues to thrive beyond our time.

Devotional

Day 1: Grafting into the True Vine
Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and branches to illustrate the profound connection He desires with us. By being grafted into Him, the True Vine, we are invited to experience a life that is not just about mere existence but about flourishing. This connection is vital as it allows His life to flow into us, enabling us to bear much fruit. The imagery of grafting signifies a deliberate act of joining, where a branch is reconnected to the vine to receive life. This is a powerful reminder that our spiritual journey is not meant to be lived in isolation but in intimate connection with Christ. As we remain in Him, we draw strength, nourishment, and purpose, leading to a life that reflects His love and grace. [54:34]

John 15:4-5 (ESV): "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."

Reflection: In what areas of your life do you feel disconnected from Christ? How can you intentionally seek to be grafted into Him today, allowing His life to flow through you?

Day 2: Beauty in Discipleship
In a world overwhelmed with information, the next generation is searching for authenticity and transformation. They are drawn to lives that resonate with the love and peace of Christ, compelling them to ask deeper questions about faith and purpose. Discipleship, therefore, is not just about imparting knowledge or adhering to doctrines but about embodying the beauty of Christ's love. When we live lives that reflect His love, we become magnetic, drawing others to Him. This beauty in discipleship is about living a life that is attractive and compelling, one that invites others to experience the transformative power of Christ's love. [57:17]

2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV): "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."

Reflection: How can you embody the beauty of Christ's love in your daily interactions? What specific actions can you take to make your life a reflection of His transformative power?

Day 3: Intentionality in Mentorship
Discipleship requires deliberate effort and commitment. Jesus' mandate to make disciples of all nations is a call to action, urging us to be intentional in mentoring and nurturing the next generation. Recognizing them as precious gifts entrusted to us by God, we are called to plant seeds of faith and love, even if we may never see the full harvest. Our role is to prepare and empower them to carry on the work of the Kingdom. This intentionality in mentorship involves creating opportunities for growth, providing guidance, and being a source of encouragement and support. [01:12:35]

1 Thessalonians 2:8 (ESV): "So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us."

Reflection: Who in your life can you intentionally mentor and nurture in their faith journey? What steps can you take today to invest in their spiritual growth?

Day 4: The Power of Community
Community and mentorship are vital in our spiritual journey. Just as we have been blessed by those who have gone before us, we are called to invest in the lives of others, passing on the torch of faith. This is a vision of selfless love, where we give ourselves to the work of building up the next generation, ensuring that the Kingdom of God continues to thrive beyond our time. The power of community lies in its ability to provide support, encouragement, and accountability, creating an environment where individuals can grow and flourish in their faith. [01:21:25]

Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV): "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

Reflection: How can you contribute to building a strong and supportive community of faith? What specific actions can you take to invest in the lives of others within your community?

Day 5: Living a Life that Compels
When we live lives that reflect the love of Christ, we become magnetic, drawing others to Him. Our discipleship needs to be more than facts and doctrines; it should lead to transformation and a life that compels others to seek Christ. This involves living authentically, with integrity and purpose, allowing the love of Christ to shine through our actions and words. A life that compels is one that is marked by joy, peace, and a deep sense of purpose, inviting others to experience the fullness of life in Christ. [01:06:31]

Matthew 5:16 (ESV): "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

Reflection: What aspects of your life reflect the love of Christ to those around you? How can you live in a way that compels others to seek and experience the transformative power of Christ's love?

Quotes

Jesus says I am the branch or sorry I'm the vine but what he's also saying is there's all sorts of other Vines you might want to try to attach yourself to I mean there are many examples right if you're from my generation like the amount of people who like have given their whole selves to CrossFit and then they just like post about it on social media and it becomes their whole platform. [00:55:28]

I'm not simply a Vine amongst a bunch of other vines that will give you something similar no he says what I am the True Vine that yes there are many things you can try to attach yourself to to draw a source of life and meaning however none of them will give you what I can give you the life you're truly looking for. [00:56:56]

Jesus dream for you is to come alive while you're here and become a vision of what that's going to be like Glory Hallelujah praise His name we can find find life in him Jesus doesn't want to see you merely exist Jesus wants to see you flourish St erus one of the church fathers he said the glory of God is a human being Fully Alive. [00:58:04]

When you walk into a room with Grant you see the fruit of the spirit on full display like love joy peace in abundance patience kindness goodness in abundance faithfulness gentleness and self-control he is a vision of what God had intended Humanity to be like he's beautiful human being and he has this uncanny ability that when when you're with him and you're speaking with him you can tell just the way that he's looking at you you are the only person in the world that matters. [01:00:32]

This is why I say that beauty needs to be in the front of our mind when we have conversations about discipleship for ages and especially in this last generation evangelism and discipleship in the church has primarily been done around truth statements facts doctrines and ideas that is highly important and I'll get back to how important that is later however you have to recognize this next Generation that is coming behind us is so in inundated with information all the time. [01:02:40]

The generation to come after us is compelled by Beauty and here's what Jesus Christ offers us abide in me as I abide in you and you will do what you'll bear much fruit as the my life begins to pour out into you and as you begin to abide in that life something is going to flow out of you that is going to leave people asking questions. [01:06:31]

The best witnessing strategy the best way to do evangelism nowadays is to become and hear this language so magnetic with love that people are drawn to you and then you point them to Jesus if you abide in the vine and Jesus life begins to pour out of you you're going to become something beautiful to come back to the language again he's going to make you alive he's going to let you flourish. [01:07:14]

Intentionality now I'm not specifically speaking about intentionality about our own Walks With Jesus although that is important I'm speaking about intentionality when it comes to the Next Generation we have to be intentional um yeah one famous author once wrote nobody has ever stumbled into Holiness nobody's ever become a faithful Christian by accident it takes intentionality and the same thing is true with discipleship. [01:12:35]

Jesus mandate to us at the end of his life is what all authority in Heaven and Earth has been given to me so I give unto you now go and what Make Disciples of all Nations if you're a Christian there's your job go and make disciples this is an invitation and a command go and make disciples and we have to be highly intentional about thinking about how we do discipleship and how we Mentor. [01:13:41]

If you have been given the gospel you have been entrusted with something precious it's not just for you my friends it is for the world around you the gospel is good news that brings great joy to all people and we have been entrusted with it to pass it down to the Next Generation but there's something else about this word in trust that I was thinking about um entrust has to do with value right. [01:14:32]

A society grows great when old men plant trees under whose shade they will never sit a society grows great when old men plant trees under whose shade they will never sit what a vision that you consider the Next Generation so worthwhile that you plant good things that only they will harvest that you will never see the light of because you care about those who are going to come after you. [01:17:12]

The kingdom is going to go on Beyond us like our day is going to come when God's going to ring the bell and call us home and all we get to do in the meantime is hold down the ground proclaim the goodness of God in the land of the living until the next Generation stands up to car carry on the work and God will raise people up who are going to carry on the torch who are going to come alongside us and they're going to say thank you for doing the work you have done we'll take it from here.
