Bible Reading2 Corinthians 4:1-18 “Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, 'I believed, and so I spoke,' we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
[28:09]Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
[38:57]2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
[43:08]Psalm 56:8 “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?”
[01:01:00]Observation questions- In 2 Corinthians 4, what contrasts does Paul use to describe the believer’s suffering and God’s preserving care—such as afflicted but not crushed, perplexed but not in despair? [46:10]
- According to 2 Corinthians 4:1-6, what does Paul say he refuses to do in ministry, and what does he say he actually proclaims?
- In 2 Corinthians 4:7, what picture does Paul use for believers, and what does that picture show about where the real power comes from? [41:36]
- In 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, what is wasting away, what is being renewed, and what are believers told to look at? [33:57]
Interpretation questions- Paul says believers should look not to what is seen but to what is unseen. How should that shape the way a Christian thinks about pain, pressure, and long seasons of difficulty? [33:57]
- Paul says the treasure is carried in jars of clay so that the surpassing power is clearly from God and not from us. Why is weakness such an important part of Christian life and ministry, rather than something to hide? [41:06]
- Paul says suffering can become a place where the life of Jesus is revealed in mortal bodies. What might it look like for someone’s grief, weakness, or endurance to become a window through which others see Christ? [50:35]
- Paul calls present affliction light and momentary compared to eternal glory. How can that statement be true without making light of real sorrow or deep loss? [57:08]
Application questions- Life often feels like a marathon, and many believers know what it is to hit the wall. What has been most likely lately to pull a person’s eyes away from Christ—fear, disappointment, temptation, exhaustion, grief, or something else? [40:26]
- “For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ” is a good correction for a wandering heart. What does that need to look like in a very practical way this week—in prayer, in Scripture, or in daily thought patterns? [39:31]
- The jar of clay is fragile, but the treasure inside is from God. Where does a person feel especially weak or cracked right now, and how might Christ want to show his strength there instead of waiting for things to feel impressive or put together? [42:55]
- Christ does not lose his people to their circumstances. In a hard situation right now, what would it look like to believe that hard pressed does not mean crushed, and struck down does not mean destroyed? [46:10]
- The body of Christ can mirror God’s presence in very simple ways. Who might need someone to just sit with them, call them, bring coffee, or quietly remind them, “I’m here”? What keeps people from offering that kind of presence? [48:53]
- Suffering can become a window through which others see Jesus. Has there been a hard place in life where Christ became more visible, either in a person’s own life or in someone else’s? What made that stand out? [51:18]
- No tear falls wasted before God. When sorrow lingers, how does it help to know that God keeps count, remembers, and is somehow preparing an eternal weight of glory through affliction? [01:00:59]
