Be a fisher of men - Luke 5:1-17

Luke presents Jesus standing by the Lake of Gennesaret while a hungry multitude presses in to hear the word of God. God’s word is what people need because it is true, trustworthy, and able to bring people to faith and increase their faith. The contrast between God’s word and the noise of social media, the Internet, and the news shows why believers need to regularly open the Bible and renew their minds. The fishermen washing their nets picture the need to wash worldly thinking out of the mind, because the world constantly pushes money, image, promotions, and an easy retirement as the main things in life.

Jesus enters Simon Peter’s boat and begins with a simple command: put out a little from the land. Peter’s obedience in that little thing prepares him for a greater calling, since God entrusts greater responsibility to those faithful with the time, talents, and resources already given. Jesus then tells Peter to launch out into the deep and let down the nets, even though Peter had toiled all night and caught nothing. Peter’s words, “Nevertheless at Your word,” show faith that obeys Christ over personal experience, human wisdom, and fear.

The miraculous catch reveals that labor in the flesh can produce nothing, while labor done in the power of God brings fruit that is beyond human ability. Peter’s response is not pride over the greatest catch of his career but humility before the Lord: “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Jesus answers Peter’s fear with a higher purpose, calling him to catch men. Peter, Andrew, James, and John forsake all and follow Christ because no career, possession, sinful habit, or earthly dream compares with knowing God and being used for His kingdom.

Luke then turns to a man full of leprosy, a living picture of sin that begins beneath the surface, spreads, dulls conviction, and separates people from God and others. Jesus does not step back from the man’s uncleanness. Jesus reaches out, touches him, and says, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Christ’s compassion shows that truth must be spoken in love, not through condemnation or a harsh desire to win arguments. God came into the world not to condemn the world, but that the world through Christ might be saved.
