Finding True Peace Through Repentance and Christ
Summary
In our world today, despite the advancements in education, technology, and philosophy, we find ourselves no closer to a utopian society. The city of hope and peace that humanity strives for seems as distant as ever. The reality is that without Christ, the world remains in darkness, going around in circles without true progress. Philosophers and thinkers, even those who are not Christians, often describe history as cyclical, where civilizations rise and fall, never reaching a permanent state of peace or enlightenment. This cyclical nature of history leaves humanity in a state of despair, sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, vulnerable to the dangers and attacks of life.
The world is not only hopeless but also in grave danger. We are constantly beset by enemies, both physical and spiritual, that rob us of our innocence, purity, and joy. Life is depicted as a struggle where we are attacked by illness, old age, and the inevitability of death. Many people live in fear, unable to find peace or purpose, as they are overwhelmed by the uncertainties and threats of life. This sense of doom and foreboding is prevalent, and without Christ, there is no true peace.
The ministry of John the Baptist, as described by Zechariah, was to prepare the way for the Lord by giving knowledge of salvation through the remission of sins. The Jews of his time were looking for a political savior to free them from Roman oppression, but John’s message was to correct this misconception. Salvation is not about political or social liberation but about addressing the root cause of our condition: sin. Our estrangement from God is the source of all our troubles, and the only solution is repentance and turning back to God.
The Gospel message remains the same today. Our problems are not due to external circumstances but stem from our broken relationship with God. The call is to repent, acknowledge our sins, and seek God’s mercy. Only then can we find true peace and purpose in life. Without this understanding, there is no hope for a better world.

Devotional
Day 1: The Illusion of Progress Without Christ
Despite humanity's advancements in education, technology, and philosophy, true progress remains elusive without Christ. The world continues to experience a cyclical pattern of rise and fall, as civilizations never reach a permanent state of peace or enlightenment. This cycle leaves humanity in a state of despair, as the city of hope and peace remains a distant dream. The absence of Christ in the world results in darkness, where true progress and enlightenment are unattainable. [18:11]
"For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, 'He catches the wise in their craftiness,' and again, 'The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.'" (1 Corinthians 3:19-20, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life are you relying solely on human wisdom and progress? How can you invite Christ into these areas to bring true enlightenment and peace?
Day 2: Vulnerability in Darkness
The world is in a state of despair, sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, vulnerable to life's dangers. Without Christ, there is no true peace or hope. People are constantly beset by enemies, both physical and spiritual, that rob them of their innocence, purity, and joy. Life is depicted as a struggle where illness, old age, and the inevitability of death attack us. Many live in fear, unable to find peace or purpose, overwhelmed by life's uncertainties and threats. [21:29]
"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you." (Isaiah 60:1-2, ESV)
Reflection: What specific fears or uncertainties are you facing today? How can you seek Christ's light to dispel the darkness in these areas of your life?
Day 3: The Spiritual Battle for Joy and Peace
Our struggles are not just physical but spiritual, as we are constantly attacked by forces that rob us of joy and peace. Life's uncertainties and threats leave many in fear and without purpose. The world is filled with spiritual and physical enemies that seek to steal our joy and peace, leaving us vulnerable and in despair. Without Christ, we are left defenseless against these attacks, unable to find true peace or purpose. [24:03]
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." (Ephesians 6:10-11, ESV)
Reflection: Identify a specific area in your life where you feel spiritually attacked. What steps can you take to put on the armor of God and stand firm in His strength?
Day 4: Misconceptions of Salvation
John the Baptist's ministry was to correct the misconception of salvation as political liberation. True salvation addresses the root cause of our condition: sin and estrangement from God. The Jews of his time were looking for a political savior to free them from Roman oppression, but John's message was to prepare the way for the Lord by giving knowledge of salvation through the remission of sins. Salvation is not about political or social liberation but about addressing our estrangement from God. [32:36]
"For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." (Colossians 1:13-14, ESV)
Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you are seeking salvation through worldly means rather than through Christ? How can you refocus on the true salvation that comes from addressing your relationship with God?
Day 5: The Call to Repentance
The Gospel message calls for repentance and turning back to God. Our problems stem from a broken relationship with Him, and only through repentance can we find true peace and purpose. The call is to repent, acknowledge our sins, and seek God's mercy. Without this understanding, there is no hope for a better world. True peace and purpose in life can only be found through repentance and a restored relationship with God. [35:21]
"Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus." (Acts 3:19-20, ESV)
Reflection: What specific sins or areas of estrangement from God do you need to repent of today? How can you actively seek His mercy and restoration in these areas?
Quotes
there's been all the thinking and all the publishing of books and all the multiplication of schools and of Education would anybody like to say that we're nearer the city can you see the city can you see the outlines of the city can you see that girl for which mankind is striving after which it is striving can you say that you're beginning to see the lights of the city sparkling in the Gloom and it that needs just a few years before the world will have arrived there would you like to say that does the world look like that tonight does it look as if men as the result of his efforts and his striving and his Endeavor is at last on the verge of solving his problems it would be a very bold indeed it would be a very foolish man who would like to say that that is the case [00:17:30]
the fact is my friends when we are honest and admit it we've got to confess that there is no world in this no light in this world tonight apart from this light that has come in the face of Jesus Christ ultimately and it's a matter that I'm prepared to argue with anybody who likes to contest it at any time or in any place ultimately I say without Christ the world is hopeless there is no light at all we simply keep on going round and round in circles indeed some of the best philosophers who are not Christians would have us believe that the whole history of mankind is circular and that's why they're so profoundly pessimistic [00:18:24]
they say what happens in this world is that you almost seem to be climbing up what you think is a Lea that's going to lead you to heaven or to some kind of paradise but alas you ever discover that you get to a point when you seem to be coming to a level again and you begin to realize that you're descending on the other side you're not climing up a ladder that goes perpendicularly straight up you were simply going up the side of a circle it leads to the top and you go down the other side look at the histories they say of the great civilizations go and read professor tby and that's what he'll tell you it's all a matter of cycles and of circles [00:19:19]
think of the great civilization that was once in China and that went think of the great civilization in Egypt the amazing astounding learning that they once had there in almost every respect and how they went down the other side of the circle the same in Persia the same in Greece the same in Rome is not that the fact while these men elaborated a very Phil opy which teaches that that the whole thing is cyclical and circular and that you're constantly being sarted when you think you're arriving you seem to get further away you never go up and really arrive the world is lost is there anyone who can give us a lead tonight [00:20:03]
do you know any philosopher of Any teacher anywhere who can give you an assured hope who is he there's ample opportunity for him to speak in the wildness OR to write him books they jump at an opportunity to let him speak but where is he no no the fact is that the world as it was when Zechariah spoke is in a condition of sitting in darkness we've sought we've searched we've investigated but we don't know we've lost our way there seems to be no light at all and Mankind at the moment I suggest to you is becoming cynical it's sitting down down in Despair and in a condition of hopelessness [00:20:48]
and that is why there are so many who have carried this thing to its logical conclusion in a sense and are just saying let us eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die sitting in darkness yes but as I've said not only that according to this description also in the shadow of death and this I say is the picture in which are represented the various dangers that confront people who are in that condition there you are in Open Country you haven't got a city wall to defend you there's no police to guard you you're just in this open space just sitting down because there's nothing else to do and at any moment I say you may be attacked by Maring BS and groups of beasts or by gangs of Thieves and of robbers [00:21:29]
not only is the world hopeless the world is in a terrible danger and there are these enemies that are so constantly attacking us I don't want to give you an exhaustive list let me just mention some of them the trouble with mankind is not merely that we can't find a way out of all our problems and perplexities but we are constantly being beset and constantly being attacked the difficulty in life is this isn't it not only that you can't advance but you can't even stay where you are you seem to be losing the whole time there are those who would even depict Life as a kind of Peter pen existence which means that we come into this world innocent and perfect [00:22:29]
I don't subscribe to their philosophy I think it's quite wrong but it's interesting that even they who are not Christians who believe that are really showing what Zacharias means when talks about this sitting in the shadow of death they say that's how we come into the world and then the world begins to attack us it robs us of our innocence it robs us of our Purity it robs us of our Chastity it robs us of our hopefulness it turns us into cynics it robs us of our joy and of our peace it's always there attacking us taking things from us dragging us down oh yes shades of the prison house begin to close upon the growing by he's lost that Rapture of Youth [00:23:09]
that's their philosophy well I say I don't accept it as an explanation of life but I've got to agree with the facts the facts are perfectly right and it's true of the individual and it's true of the whole world outside Christ and apart from him not only do things not get better they get worse and we seem to be losing something oh yes but it's not only spiritual and moral there are certain other enemies aren't there think of this picture with that group of people seated there in that Wilderness can't go on because of the darkness they wanted to get to the city they come and they're afraid that any moment they hear some mysterious noises are these animals coming to them are they about to devour them are the robbers of the thieves coming [00:23:49]
and isn't that life we can't understand the mystery we can't solve the problem we're in this darkness in this fog yes and as we sit there in this helplessness we hear these ominous sounds what are they when illness illness a stab of pain an acute trouble something that reminds me of the Frailty of my life the tenuous character of my existence old age the first signs and indications of the decaying of the tent the reminder that I've got to go on do what I will I can't help it I hear them coming nearer and nearer these Marauders these attackers they're coming for me when will they come isn't that it [00:24:29]
oh I was told a thing the other day by a lady who told me that she'd been to the prize giving I think it was of our old school atate it was some special celebration in connection with the school and she told me that she'd met a friend of hers whom she hadn't seen for a number of years incidentally a friend living here in London I think she said in rather a prominent position and the two friends met and the friend here in London said to this other one to whom I was speaking in the provinces she said what's the matter with you what do you mean said the friend she said you're letting yourself get old she said you shouldn't do that you're foolish why you let yourself get old like this [00:25:58]
well said my friend it's no use fighting it is it I am older you and I are that much older since we last met ah yes said this friend here in London who was living this high life soall I know who we are but I hate the thing I hate all age I hate the fact I'm getting older I hate the thought of death and yet I can do nothing about it I can't stop it that's it she's lost in life you see in this world and she can hear this thing which to her is a beast of prey a Marauder all age barking and coming nearer and ready to grip her and to devour her and to destroy her and she hates it but she can't stop it [00:26:58]
