Finding True Joy: The Essence of Christian Hedonism
Devotional
Day 1: The Universal Longing for Happiness
The desire for happiness is a fundamental aspect of human nature, akin to a deep hunger that seeks fulfillment. This longing is not inherently sinful but is a God-given drive that should be directed towards Him, the source of ultimate joy and satisfaction. In a world where temporary pleasures often distract us, it is crucial to recognize that only God can truly satisfy our deepest desires. By intensifying this longing and focusing it on God, we align ourselves with His purpose and find enduring happiness. [05:16]
Psalm 16:11 (ESV): "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
Reflection: What are some temporary pleasures you often turn to for happiness? How can you redirect that longing towards God today?
Day 2: Joy in God as the Highest Good
True and lasting happiness is found only in God, and settling for anything less is considered a folly. In God's presence, there is fullness of joy and eternal pleasures, making Him the highest good we can pursue. This vertical hedonism, or joy in God, forms the foundation of our faith and mission. By seeking joy in God, we honor Him and fulfill our deepest desires, aligning ourselves with His divine purpose. [07:26]
Psalm 73:25-26 (ESV): "Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
Reflection: In what ways can you prioritize seeking joy in God over other pursuits this week?
Day 3: The Consummation of Joy in Sharing
Our joy in God is not complete until it is shared with others. This horizontal expansion of joy is essential, as God designed us to enjoy His glory by bringing others into the experience. Sharing our joy in God is a vital part of our mission and evangelism, allowing us to fulfill the Great Commission and expand the kingdom of God. By inviting others to experience the joy we have found in God, we not only complete our own joy but also participate in God's redemptive work in the world. [09:01]
1 John 1:3-4 (ESV): "That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete."
Reflection: Who is someone you can share your joy in God with this week? How can you invite them into this experience?
Day 4: God's Self-Glorification as Love
God's pursuit of His own glory is the most loving act because it offers us the greatest gift—Himself. Our joy in God is consummated in praise, which is not only an expression but a completion of our enjoyment. Thus, God's self-exaltation is both virtuous and loving, as it draws us into a deeper relationship with Him and allows us to experience His glory. By understanding God's self-glorification as an act of love, we can better appreciate His divine nature and respond with worship and adoration. [29:23]
Isaiah 48:11 (ESV): "For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another."
Reflection: How does understanding God's self-glorification as an act of love change your perspective on worship and praise?
Day 5: The Necessity of Pursuing Joy in God
Pursuing joy in God is not optional but essential for true worship and virtue. The Bible commands us to delight in God, and this pursuit of pleasure in Him is integral to our faith. It aligns with the nature of sin, which is the rejection of God as the source of true joy. By seeking joy in God, we fulfill our purpose and align ourselves with His will, experiencing the fullness of life He offers. This pursuit is a vital aspect of our spiritual journey and a reflection of our commitment to God. [37:37]
Psalm 37:4 (ESV): "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."
Reflection: What steps can you take today to actively pursue joy in God and make it a central part of your worship?
Sermon Summary
In this message, I explore the concept of Christian Hedonism, a term that encapsulates the idea that our deepest and most enduring happiness is found in God alone. As we approach the end times, we witness a dual phenomenon: a cooling of love for God among many and a fervent surge in world evangelization. This juxtaposition calls for a passionate, risk-taking commitment to spreading the Gospel, fueled by a profound joy in God. The essence of Christian Hedonism is the belief that the longing to be happy is universal and not inherently evil. Instead, it should be intensified and directed towards God, who is the source of ultimate joy and satisfaction.
The foundation of this pursuit is rooted in the understanding that God Himself seeks His own glory and joy. This divine self-centeredness is not egotistical but rather the most loving act, as it offers us the greatest gift—God Himself. Our joy in God reaches its consummation when shared with others, expanding through acts of love and evangelism. This is not a call to abandon self-denial but to understand it as a means to a greater end: the joy found in God. The pursuit of pleasure in God is not optional but a necessary part of worship and virtue, as it honors God and fulfills our deepest desires.

Sermon Clips
The Longing To Be Happy is a universal experience has great missionary implications and Evangelistic implications in this city everybody wants to be happy and this is not evil it's like hunger it's neither good nor bad in and of itself it's just there the Longing To Be Happy. [00:03:21]
We should never try to deny or resist our longing to be happy as though it were a bad impulse instead we should seek to intensify this longing and nourish it with whatever will provide the deepest and most enduring satisfaction. [00:05:16]
The deepest and most enduring happiness is found only in God to settle for anything less is insane. We will see why it's insane a little later the key text here is Psalm 1611 which I quoted last time it's one of my key and favorite verses thou does show me the path of life in thy presence is fullness of joy in thy right hand are Pleasures forever more. [00:07:26]
The happiness that we find in God reaches its consummation when it is shared with others in the manifold ways of love. Of number three was vertical Hedonism, find your joy in God that's vertical Hedonism now number four says vertical Hedonism comes to its consummation when it draws other people into the experience of it. [00:09:01]
The pursuit of pleasure is a necessary part not optional a necessary part of all worship and virtue so my main thesis here at the end and this is what we're going to spend some more time on now is you can't honor God if you don't make it your vocation to be happy in God. [00:12:46]
The foundation of that truth and that Quest is that God has the same Quest before I do God's Quest is to be happy in glorifying God. [00:14:19]
The chief end of God is to glorify God and enjoy himself forever that's the foundation of my quest to give glory to God. [00:15:04]
God does everything for the glory of God God will not be denied the highest pleasure of worship and he is not an idolator and therefore he worships God that's the foundation of Christian hedonism. [00:17:15]
If God wants to bring my delight in God the best gift to consummation he must seek my praise to be loving God is the one being in the universe for whom self-exaltation is the highest virtue and the most loving act. [00:29:23]
The nature of sin teaches us that the Bible means for us to pursue the fountain and not to heue Out Sisters that won't work so my answer to the first objection is yes the Bible does teach these things. [00:41:02]
The struggle to submit is not a struggle to submit but a struggle to accept and with passion I mean possibly with joy picture me with my ground teeth stalking Joy fully armed to for it is a highly dangerous Quest. [00:43:14]
The way you serve God is Not by saying I'll help you but I'll stay where you can help me so that I can bless the world so you go wherever the help of God goes. [00:50:37]
