Finding True Identity Beyond Performance and Success
Summary
### Summary
In today's sermon, we delved into the profound lie that our worth and identity are based on what we do and how well we do it. This lie, perpetuated by society, drives us to chase an ever-elusive image of success, leading to a life of idolatry and identity theft. We explored how this performance-oriented mindset starts from a young age and is reinforced by societal pressures, pushing us to seek validation through achievements and external accolades. This relentless pursuit often results in sacrificing our well-being, relationships, and even our souls.
We examined the story of the rich young ruler from Luke 18, who epitomized this identity theft cycle. Despite his wealth and adherence to religious laws, he felt an emptiness that led him to Jesus. However, his inability to surrender his false image of success prevented him from experiencing true fulfillment. This narrative underscores the futility of seeking identity in anything other than God.
In contrast, we introduced the life-giving cycle, which begins with understanding our identity in God. When we recognize that we are beloved children of the Most High King, it leads to intimacy with God, transforming our lives and allowing us to reflect His image to the world. This cycle frees us from the bondage of performance and societal expectations, enabling us to live authentically and purposefully.
We concluded by emphasizing the importance of community and vulnerability. True freedom comes from embracing our identity in Christ and letting go of the false images we project. By doing so, we can experience genuine transformation and contribute meaningfully to God's kingdom.

Day 1: The Lie of Performance-Based Identity
Description: Society often tells us that our worth is tied to our achievements and how well we perform. This lie leads us to chase an ever-moving target of success, resulting in a life of idolatry and identity theft. True fulfillment comes not from what we do but from who we are in Christ. This relentless pursuit of validation through achievements and external accolades often results in sacrificing our well-being, relationships, and even our souls. Recognizing this lie is the first step towards breaking free from the bondage of performance and societal expectations. [24:25]
Jeremiah 9:23-24 (ESV): "Thus says the Lord: 'Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.'"
Reflection: Think about an area in your life where you feel pressured to perform or achieve. How can you begin to shift your focus from seeking validation through this area to finding your worth in your identity in Christ?
Day 2: The Rich Young Ruler's Dilemma
Description: The story of the rich young ruler in Luke 18 illustrates the emptiness of a life built on external success. Despite his wealth and adherence to religious laws, he felt something was missing. His inability to surrender his false image of success prevented him from experiencing true fulfillment in Jesus. This narrative underscores the futility of seeking identity in anything other than God. It serves as a powerful reminder that true fulfillment and purpose come from a relationship with Jesus, not from our accomplishments or material possessions. [41:45]
Luke 18:22-23 (ESV): "When Jesus heard this, he said to him, 'One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.' But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich."
Reflection: Reflect on a possession or achievement that you hold dear. How might this be hindering your relationship with Jesus? What steps can you take to prioritize your relationship with Him over this possession or achievement?
Day 3: Identity in God Leads to Intimacy
Description: Understanding our identity as beloved children of God is the foundation for a life of intimacy with Him. This relationship transforms us, allowing us to reflect God's image to the world. It frees us from the need to seek validation through achievements and societal approval. When we recognize that we are beloved children of the Most High King, it leads to intimacy with God, transforming our lives and allowing us to reflect His image to the world. This cycle frees us from the bondage of performance and societal expectations, enabling us to live authentically and purposefully. [46:42]
1 John 3:1 (ESV): "See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him."
Reflection: How does knowing that you are a beloved child of God change the way you view yourself and your daily interactions? What practical steps can you take to deepen your intimacy with God this week?
Day 4: The Life-Giving Cycle
Description: The life-giving cycle begins with recognizing our identity in God, which leads to intimacy with Him and ultimately allows us to reflect His image. This cycle contrasts sharply with the identity theft cycle, which is based on chasing a false image of success. Embracing the life-giving cycle brings true freedom and purpose. When we live out of our true identity in Christ, we are freed from the relentless pursuit of societal approval and can live authentically and purposefully. This transformation not only impacts our own lives but also allows us to be a light to others, reflecting God's love and grace. [51:37]
2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV): "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."
Reflection: In what ways have you been chasing a false image of success? How can you begin to embrace the life-giving cycle by recognizing your identity in God and seeking intimacy with Him?
Day 5: The Importance of Community and Vulnerability
Description: True freedom comes from letting go of the false images we project and embracing our identity in Christ. This involves being vulnerable and engaging in authentic community. By doing so, we can experience genuine transformation and support each other in our spiritual journeys. Community and vulnerability are essential for spiritual growth and transformation. When we are open and honest with others about our struggles and weaknesses, we create an environment where true healing and growth can occur. This mutual support helps us to live out our identity in Christ more fully and to encourage others to do the same. [01:00:02]
James 5:16 (ESV): "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working."
Reflection: Think of a trusted friend or community member with whom you can be vulnerable. How can you take a step towards deeper authenticity and mutual support in your relationship with them this week?
Quotes
1. "And what? Satan is trying to get us to do. Is not to tell lies. That's not his agenda. His agenda is for you and I to actually live out lies. And when we live out the lies of Satan. Then we're not living out the truth found in God's word. And what happens is, Satan hacks into our soul. And he steals our identity." [22:35] (27 seconds)
2. "And the lie that we're going after. Is that I am what I do. In other words. Is that the lie says that my worth. My value. And my identity. Is based on what I do. And how well I do it. Now folks don't get me wrong. Every one of us in this room. Is that we want to look successful. I don't know of anyone. Who wants to raise their hand. And go hey I just want to look like a loser. For the rest of my life." [24:25] (33 seconds)
3. "And here's what I've come to the conclusion of, is that they are hungry and they desire acceptance. I mean, just think about this. Many of you are in this room and you're still looking for that elusive attaboy, that you've never received in your life. You're hungry for approval, acceptance, for affirmation. Do you realize that most workaholics today as adults is that they lived in a performance-based home, that the only time that they got acceptance, the only time that they got love, is when they actually earned it and worked hard for it." [30:34] (42 seconds)
4. "And the feeling that you have deep in you is that you are... You are a nobody. And you believe that somehow or another that you've got to be a somebody. And listen to me, here's what you'll do. When you are a nobody, and you believe that lie straight from hell, then you're going to give everything that you have to become a somebody because you hate the feeling of being a nobody." [32:39] (32 seconds)
5. "And here's the reality is that you may accomplish that. You may come to the point where everybody thinks that you're somebody. But deep down inside of you, you know that you have sacrificed your family, your marriage, your children, everything. And deep down, you don't even know yourself. You don't even like yourself. You sure you've got a million followers on X. Sure, you've got some trophies. Sure, you got a nice financial portfolio. But deep down, you don't like yourself. You don't even know who you are and you don't even know the purpose of why you're there." [33:39] (38 seconds)
6. "And friends, listen to me. This is not. About money. This is about surrender. This young man would not surrender his life to Jesus. You know why? Is because he was surrendering his life to the false image that he was worshiping. See, friends, listen to me. You can be poor as dirt and still be lost. This is about the heart. And who has your heart and why do they have your heart?" [45:58] (32 seconds)
7. "And here's the reality. Last. Last week, we looked at this reality that what God said about you, that you're accepted, that you're secure, that you're significant. And I just want to remind you one last time in this sermon series. I want you to look at first John, chapter three, verse one. And I want you to really pay attention. See what great love the father has lavished on us. Listen to me, my friends, if you believe anything other than that, God is a God of love. You're worshiping a God I know nothing about because let me tell you something. The God that I know, the God that I study in scripture, the God that I worship, the God that I bow down to is that he is a God of love." [47:45] (47 seconds)
8. "And the only thing that he can ever give to you is nothing but his goodness. He cannot give you second things. He cannot give you leftover things. And if you're going around questioning the fact if God loves you or if God is giving you second best, then you don't understand who God is. God lavished his love on us. How did he do that? He bankrupt heaven when he sent his son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross. And if he did not hold Jesus back, why would he hold back his love or his goodness for you and for me?" [48:54] (36 seconds)
9. "And folks, because we do not buy into the life giving cycle, because we're hook, line, sinker on the identity theft cycle, here's what happens. We never buy into the verse in Ephesians chapter two, verse 10. We never buy into this. Listen to me, my friends, for we are God's masterpiece. You don't believe that you're God's masterpiece. And here's the reason why you don't believe that you're his masterpiece is because you are dealing in the currency currency of image driven. You're trying to keep your image alive, alive. You're trying to be perfect. You're trying to be successful. You're trying to get rid of all the blemishes. You're trying to be Mr. or Mrs. Perfection." [52:38] (53 seconds)
10. "And friends, listen to me. God has created you just the way that you are. He's placed you right where you're at. See, some of you, you can't bloom where you're planted because you're trying to chase after the image driven society. But God has placed you right where you're at, right with the talents and the gifts that you have so that you can flourish. And when you embrace that, then you push back the darkness in a region and you help people to live the all in life." [55:25] (33 seconds)
