"Flat tires, have you ever noticed that they're never convenient? It's generally when we have somewhere to be, or we're dressed up, or it's just a major problem because there's a whole bunch of other stuff we're trying to deal with. They always test our patience and cause us to kind of reveal, hey, how is my heart doing today?" [00:00:13] (21 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

"And yet what we realize is that in the midst of them, that sometimes it's hard to be thankful. It's hard to find a reason to thank God or praise God, and ultimately it's hard to find joy sometimes in these situations." [00:02:36] (16 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

"The posture of thankfulness is this reminder that it still, like most things in life, flows from God's generosity and God's grace in our lives. We get this picture of who God is and what He's done for us." [00:04:01] (15 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

"In the same way, God provides for us. God comes to us, and He provides for us each and every day, and that is a reason to be thankful. And ultimately, what He does is He helps us to find peace in Christ." [00:05:14] (18 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

"Paul talks about it this way in Colossians, but there's this connection between thanksgiving and peace. They're connected. They're both gifts from God, and it's hard to have peace if you're not thankful, and it's hard to be thankful if you don't have some sense of peace." "And so Paul brings them together. He says, let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts and be thankful." [00:05:50] (11 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

"And so we see that ultimately what Paul is leading us toward is a posture that is rooted in joy, not the circumstances that are around me and how good or how great things are going, but rather in knowing that the victory is already ours, that the hope and the peace is already ours claimed for us in Christ." "Now notice Paul doesn't say for everything, but in everything. And I think for me, at least personally, that is a sigh, there's a sigh of relief there, because you've probably experienced the difficult moments in life or the unfavorable circumstances, and you feel kind of guilty because you're not thanking God for whatever bad thing is happening in your life." "And so the question that we ask ourselves is, how can we cultivate deep roots of thankfulness? Because it comes through life experience. It comes from being reminded time and time again of how God has been faithful, and how his love continues to endure through it all." "And I have to say this just so I don't get in trouble at home, but I don't always respond this way to inconveniences. I just have to put that out there. I'm not always like that, but this time it was different, which is just a testament to God's grace." [00:14:03] (17 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
