Finding Peace in Anxiety Through Faith and Surrender
Summary
In today's discussion, we delved into the pervasive issue of anxiety, especially during tumultuous times marked by economic volatility, political unrest, and personal challenges. As we journey through the Advent season, we are reminded of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, and how His teachings can guide us in dealing with anxiety and worry. Anxiety often stems from uncertainty about the future, and the Bible offers a profound solution: entrusting the future to God, who holds it in His hands. This act of surrender is not about eliminating troubling circumstances but about finding peace amidst them.
We explored practical ways to manage anxiety, likening it to having a quiver full of arrows—spiritual, physical, and mental strategies. Spiritually, it's about training ourselves to trust God with our future, surrendering outcomes to Him. Physically, we can calm our bodies through relaxation techniques, exercise, and proper sleep, recognizing that a relaxed body can ease an anxious mind. Mentally, a newer approach involves welcoming anxiety rather than resisting it, which can reduce its intensity. By naming and acknowledging our anxiety, we can own it without letting it dominate us, much like the psalmists who expressed their emotions openly but ultimately entrusted them to God.
In sharing personal experiences, we acknowledged that uncertainty is a part of life, and even in the face of serious challenges, like illness, we can find solace in trusting God and leaning on supportive relationships. The journey through uncertainty is not about having all the answers but about relying on the one true foundation—Jesus. As we navigate our worries, we are encouraged to welcome them, invite the Prince of Peace into our lives, and find peace in His presence.

Devotional
Day 1: Trusting God with the Uncertain Future
Anxiety often arises from the fear of the unknown, especially when the future seems unpredictable. The Bible encourages believers to place their uncertain future in God's hands, trusting Him to guide them through life's unpredictability. This act of surrender is not about ignoring the challenges but about finding peace amidst them. By entrusting the future to God, individuals can experience a profound sense of relief, knowing that they are not alone in their journey. This trust in God is a powerful antidote to anxiety, allowing believers to navigate life's uncertainties with confidence and peace. [04:19]
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV)
Reflection: What is one specific area of your future that you are anxious about? How can you begin to entrust this area to God today?
Day 2: Surrendering Control for Spiritual Peace
Developing a habit of entrusting worries to God can bring profound peace. By surrendering outcomes to Him, individuals relieve themselves of the burden of control, allowing them to experience the peace that comes from faith. This spiritual practice involves a conscious decision to let go of the need to control every aspect of life and instead trust in God's wisdom and timing. As believers cultivate this habit, they find that their faith grows stronger, and their anxiety diminishes, replaced by a deep sense of peace and assurance in God's presence. [06:06]
"Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act." (Psalm 37:5, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to God? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits?
Day 3: Calming the Body to Ease the Mind
A relaxed body can lead to a calmer mind. Engaging in activities like meditation, exercise, and proper sleep can help alleviate anxiety, making it easier to spiritually hand over worries to God. Physical relaxation techniques are not just about physical health but also about creating a conducive environment for spiritual growth. When the body is calm, the mind is more open to receiving peace and guidance from God. This holistic approach to managing anxiety recognizes the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit, encouraging believers to care for their physical well-being as part of their spiritual journey. [07:12]
"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own." (1 Corinthians 6:19, ESV)
Reflection: What physical activity or relaxation technique can you incorporate into your daily routine to help calm your mind and open your heart to God's peace?
Day 4: Embracing Anxiety to Reduce Its Power
Instead of resisting anxiety, individuals can learn to welcome it. By acknowledging and naming their anxiety, they reduce its power over them. This approach allows them to own their emotions without letting them control them, fostering a healthier mental state. Embracing anxiety involves a shift in perspective, where individuals see anxiety not as an enemy but as a part of their human experience that can be managed and understood. By doing so, they can navigate their emotions with grace and find peace in the midst of life's challenges. [10:24]
"Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved." (Psalm 55:22, ESV)
Reflection: What is one specific anxiety you are currently facing? How can you acknowledge and name it today, and what steps can you take to reduce its power over you?
Day 5: Finding Peace in the Presence of Jesus
Life's uncertainties can be daunting, but by trusting in God and relying on supportive relationships, individuals can navigate these challenges with peace. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, offers a foundation that transcends uncertain outcomes. By inviting Him into their lives, believers can find solace and strength, knowing that they are not alone in their struggles. This peace is not dependent on circumstances but is rooted in the presence of Jesus, who provides comfort and guidance through every trial. [12:40]
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27, ESV)
Reflection: How can you invite the presence of Jesus into your life today to find peace amidst uncertainty? What supportive relationships can you lean on to help you in this journey?
Quotes
The psychological core of anxiety, it's very clear to me, is the issue of uncertainty. How do we human beings deal with the things that we can't know, the things that we're uncertain about? And one of the natural outflows of that is the emotion that we call anxiety or worry. [00:03:06]
The definition in the Bible of anxiety is almost always what we're talking about right now. It's worry about tomorrow, it's uncertainty about what's going to happen. And so be anxious for nothing and let not your heart be troubled are the various ways that the biblical authors and Jesus himself would talk about dealing with anxiety. [00:03:35]
The Bible's prescription to dealing with uncertainty and the future, which by definition is uncertain, is to put the future in the hands of the one who owns the future. [00:04:17]
Anxiety management is a challenge for everybody, so I will think about having like an arrow, a quiver full of arrows that you can pull out if necessary when you're feeling anxious. And I tend to think of them as spiritual, physical, and then mental. [00:05:30]
The spiritual one is very much what we've been talking about, is training yourself to put the future into the hands of the one who owns the future, trusting God. And many of your own teachings, John, you've talked about faith, you define faith as surrendering outcomes and putting outcomes in God's hand. [00:05:50]
A relaxed body can lead to a calmer mind. Engaging in activities like meditation, exercise, and proper sleep can help alleviate anxiety, making it easier to spiritually hand over our worries to God. [00:07:12]
The body will tell you if you're holding trauma, holding anxiety, holding worry, and then targeting strategies, yoga, I think you've done some yoga, that sort of thing. Any emotional challenge can be helped by, of course, focusing on things like your relaxation and your sleep and your nutrition and your exercise. [00:07:41]
It used to be back when we were getting our training, John, we were in the late 1890s, yeah, way, way long ago, we were trained that basically when you have an anxiety or depression or anger, you should argue with the thoughts that give rise to them. [00:08:28]
A new development has been to work at maybe, again, I would say train yourself to allow or bring on or welcome anxiety when it comes to you. It turns out that if you feel anxious or you worry and you hate feeling anxious and you hate worrying, you end up exacerbating or amplifying the anxiety, the problem. [00:08:51]
We noticed that in the Psalms, I read a Psalm every morning, John, and the psalmist, and there's more negative emotion Psalms than positive emotion Psalms, and the psalmist is always very open about his or her despair or anger or anxiety or worry, but always in the structure of the psalm moves it into a sort of a not enthroning but giving it to God. [00:10:42]
Sherry had a very serious second bout with cancer last year, a bunch of surgeries, seven surgeries in 2019, and the symptoms and issues kind of continue. And I think in our different way, both of us have really benefited from what we were just talking about, being able to, of course, I can share my feelings about this regularly with you. [00:11:34]
This whole idea of uncertainty really speaks to me even as I'm thinking about the question because I don't know how this is going to turn out. I don't exactly know, but I'm just gonna trust God, and I've got friends like you and a wife like Sher that helps me with that, and I think I get to help her with that as well. [00:12:07]
