Finding Peace and Trust in Life's Storms
Summary
In Mark 4, we find a profound story where Jesus tells His disciples, "Let us go to the other side." As they journey across the Sea of Galilee, a fierce storm arises, causing even the seasoned fishermen among them to fear for their lives. Meanwhile, Jesus is asleep in the stern, resting on a cushion. The disciples, in their panic, wake Him and question His care for their safety. This narrative beautifully illustrates a common human experience: the feeling that God is distant or inactive during our times of crisis. While we know theologically that God is always present, our experiences can sometimes make it seem otherwise.
Jesus' response to the disciples, "O ye of little faith," is a gentle reminder of the importance of trust. He had already assured them of their destination, yet they allowed the storm to overshadow His promise. This is a lesson for us all. When God speaks a promise into our lives, He intends to fulfill it, regardless of the interruptions or storms we encounter along the way. We often expect a smooth journey when God has spoken, but He never guarantees a life free from tribulation. Instead, He promises His presence and peace amidst the chaos.
Jesus' command, "Peace, be still," not only calms the storm but also serves as a metaphor for the peace He offers us in our personal storms. He acknowledges their faith, albeit small, and encourages them to trust in His word. In moments of panic, fear, or uncertainty, we are invited to return to Jesus' words, to hold onto them, and to find rest in His presence. Just as Jesus rested during the storm, we too can find rest in Him, trusting that He will bring calm to our chaos and guide us to our intended destination.
Key Takeaways:
1. Trust in God's Promises: When God speaks a promise, He intends to fulfill it, even if the journey is fraught with storms. Our faith should not waver in the face of adversity, but rather, we should hold steadfast to His word. [01:10]
2. Presence in the Storm: Jesus' presence in the boat during the storm is a powerful reminder that He is with us in our trials. His calmness invites us to find peace in His presence, knowing that He is in control. [01:42]
3. Faith Over Fear: The disciples' fear highlights the struggle between faith and fear. Jesus' gentle rebuke encourages us to cultivate a faith that trusts in His promises, even when circumstances seem dire. [02:17]
4. Peace Amidst Chaos: Jesus' command, "Peace, be still," is a testament to His authority over chaos. In our lives, He offers the same peace, inviting us to rest in Him and trust in His ability to calm our storms. [02:55]
5. Resting in Jesus: Just as Jesus rested during the storm, we are called to find rest in Him. By aligning ourselves with His peace, we can navigate life's disruptions with confidence and assurance. [02:55]

Devotional
Day 1: Trust in God's Unwavering Promises
When God speaks a promise into our lives, He intends to fulfill it, even if the journey is fraught with storms. The disciples in Mark 4 were assured by Jesus that they would reach the other side of the Sea of Galilee. However, when a fierce storm arose, they allowed fear to overshadow the promise. This narrative reminds us that our faith should not waver in the face of adversity. Instead, we are called to hold steadfast to His word, trusting that He will guide us through the storms to our intended destination. [01:10]
"For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed," says the Lord, who has compassion on you. (Isaiah 54:10, ESV)
Reflection: What is one promise from God that you are struggling to trust in right now? How can you remind yourself of His faithfulness today?
Day 2: Presence in the Midst of the Storm
Jesus' presence in the boat during the storm is a powerful reminder that He is with us in our trials. Despite the chaos around them, the disciples had Jesus right there, yet they were consumed by fear. His calmness invites us to find peace in His presence, knowing that He is in control. In our own lives, we can take comfort in the fact that Jesus is with us, offering His peace and assurance even when circumstances seem overwhelming. [01:42]
"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10, ESV)
Reflection: In what current situation do you need to acknowledge Jesus' presence? How can you intentionally seek His peace today?
Day 3: Faith Over Fear
The disciples' fear during the storm highlights the struggle between faith and fear. Jesus' gentle rebuke, "O ye of little faith," encourages us to cultivate a faith that trusts in His promises, even when circumstances seem dire. Fear can often cloud our judgment and lead us to doubt God's word. However, by focusing on His promises and His presence, we can overcome fear and strengthen our faith. [02:17]
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?" (Psalm 56:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: Identify a fear that is currently overshadowing your faith. What steps can you take to trust God more in this area?
Day 4: Peace Amidst Chaos
Jesus' command, "Peace, be still," is a testament to His authority over chaos. In our lives, He offers the same peace, inviting us to rest in Him and trust in His ability to calm our storms. This peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of Christ in the midst of it. By aligning ourselves with His peace, we can navigate life's disruptions with confidence and assurance. [02:55]
"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful." (Colossians 3:15, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of chaos in your life where you need to invite Jesus' peace? How can you allow His peace to rule in your heart today?
Day 5: Resting in Jesus
Just as Jesus rested during the storm, we are called to find rest in Him. The disciples were in a state of panic, yet Jesus was asleep, demonstrating His trust in the Father's plan. By aligning ourselves with His peace, we can navigate life's disruptions with confidence and assurance. Resting in Jesus means trusting in His sovereignty and finding peace in His presence, even when the world around us is in turmoil. [02:55]
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matthew 11:28-29, ESV)
Reflection: How can you intentionally create space to rest in Jesus today? What practical steps can you take to experience His peace and rest amidst your daily responsibilities?
Quotes
One of my favorite, favorite stories in the Bible is Mark 4 when Jesus tells His disciples, "Let us go to the other side." A storm breaks out, a lilac, that's a windstorm in the Sea of Galilee, and it's causing havoc. In fact, the disciples, professional fishermen, are terrified for their very lives. [00:00:16]
Jesus is asleep in the stern. They wake Jesus up and then they ask, "Do you not care that we perish? How can you sleep when our lives are on the line?" The truth be told, sometimes it does look like God is taking a nap on us, doesn't it? Gone on a little vacation. [00:00:38]
Theologically we know that's not true, but experientially it feels like it is. Well that's how the disciples felt. When they woke up Jesus, he said, "O ye of little faith." By the way, not only was Jesus asleep, He was asleep on the cushion, and if you got a pillow under you, that means you meant to go to sleep. [00:00:56]
Jesus says, "O ye of little faith." Why would He say that given the storm they were in? Why would he say that to you and me given the storm we are in? Because He had told them, "Let us go to the other side." They were amen-ing the sermon, but when they got into the situation, they forgot the truth. [00:01:21]
When God says something, He means it, even when there are interruptions along the way. You see, we expect there to be smooth sailing when God has made a promise to us in His word and for our lives, but God never promises smooth sailing in his will. [00:01:28]
In this world, you will have tribulation. You will have lilacs, storms that disrupts the order of things. Then Jesus stands and He says, "Peace, be still." He brings calm to a chaotic situation. By the way, He didn't say they had no faith; He said they had little faith. [00:01:53]
They panicked in their problem. If you have a problem right now that's bringing you panic, fear, uncertainty, I want to just encourage you to go back to Jesus's word and wrap yourself around it. Hang on to it. Stay with it. In fact, get your pillow and lay next to Jesus. [00:02:10]
Since He's relaxing, you might as well relax, too, because you can't control the storm. And watch Jesus bring calm to the chaos in your life while He takes you to where He wants you to go. Oh yes, life has it's storms, and they are disruptive aren't they? [00:02:35]
But if Jesus can rest, and you're resting in Jesus, you get to rest, too, through the storms in your life. [00:02:49]
