Finding Our True Identity in Christ Alone

Summary

Our identity in Christ is the central theme of our lives as believers. It transcends our actions, our circumstances, and even our familial ties. In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul addresses the church in Corinth, emphasizing that our identity is not found in religious rituals, societal status, or family roles, but in Christ alone. This chapter is often misinterpreted as a rule book for marriage and relationships, but Paul's intent is to guide the Corinthians—and us—toward understanding that our true identity is rooted in Christ.

Paul addresses the confusion in Corinth caused by ascetic teachings that promoted self-denial as the path to holiness. He counters this by pointing to Christ's example of self-sacrifice, not self-denial or self-promotion. The Christian life is about serving others, as Jesus did, and finding our identity in Him. Paul uses marriage as an example, urging mutual submission and service between spouses, reflecting Christ's love and sacrifice.

Furthermore, Paul challenges the notion that our spiritual maturity is tied to our status or circumstances. Whether married or single, slave or free, Jewish or Gentile, our calling is to glorify God in whatever situation we find ourselves. We often wait for a "next step" to fully commit to Christ, but Paul reminds us that we can serve God right where we are.

Lastly, Paul warns against making family an idol. While family is important, our devotion must remain undivided and focused on Christ. Our mission is to glorify God and build His kingdom, and our family life should reflect that purpose.

Key Takeaways:

- Our identity is in Christ, not in religious rituals. Paul emphasizes that our relationship with God is not about following a set of rules but about being transformed by Christ's love and character. This transformation leads us to live out our faith authentically, beyond mere rituals. [47:12]

- Our identity is in Christ, not our status or circumstances. Paul encourages believers to serve God in their current situation, whether married or single, slave or free. Our spiritual maturity is not dependent on changing our circumstances but on living out our faith where we are. [01:02:10]

- Our identity is in Christ, not our family. While family is important, it should not overshadow our devotion to Christ. Our mission is to glorify God, and our family life should reflect that purpose, keeping our focus on Christ's imminent return. [01:10:02]

- When making decisions, ask, "Does this make me more like Christ?" This question reframes our approach to life choices, focusing on spiritual growth and Christ-likeness rather than simply avoiding sin. [01:14:22]

- Live out your faith with your family, not just to your family. Model what it means to follow Christ together, integrating faith into everyday life and showing your family the love and character of Jesus. [01:14:22]

Devotional

Day 1: Identity Beyond Rituals
Our identity in Christ transcends religious rituals and is rooted in a transformative relationship with Him. Paul emphasizes that our faith is not about adhering to a set of rules or rituals but about being transformed by the love and character of Christ. This transformation leads us to live out our faith authentically, beyond mere rituals. The focus is on a genuine relationship with God, where our actions are a reflection of our inner transformation rather than a checklist of religious duties. [47:12]

"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love." (Galatians 5:6, ESV)

Reflection: Consider a religious ritual or tradition you participate in regularly. How can you ensure that it is a reflection of your relationship with Christ rather than just a routine activity?

Day 2: Serving God in Current Circumstances
Our identity in Christ is not dependent on our status or circumstances. Paul encourages believers to serve God in their current situation, whether married or single, slave or free. Spiritual maturity is not about changing our circumstances but about living out our faith where we are. This perspective challenges us to find contentment and purpose in our present situation, trusting that God can use us right where we are to glorify Him. [01:02:10]

"Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches." (1 Corinthians 7:17, ESV)

Reflection: Identify one area of your life where you feel discontent. How can you begin to serve God and find purpose in that area today?

Day 3: Christ Above Family
While family is important, our identity in Christ should not be overshadowed by familial ties. Paul warns against making family an idol, emphasizing that our devotion must remain undivided and focused on Christ. Our mission is to glorify God, and our family life should reflect that purpose, keeping our focus on Christ's imminent return. This perspective helps us prioritize our relationship with Christ above all else, ensuring that our family life aligns with our spiritual mission. [01:10:02]

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:26, ESV)

Reflection: Reflect on how your family life aligns with your devotion to Christ. What changes can you make to ensure that Christ remains your primary focus?

Day 4: Christ-like Decision Making
When making decisions, asking, "Does this make me more like Christ?" reframes our approach to life choices. This question focuses on spiritual growth and Christ-likeness rather than simply avoiding sin. It encourages us to evaluate our decisions through the lens of becoming more like Jesus, prioritizing spiritual maturity and character development in our daily lives. [01:14:22]

"And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18, ESV)

Reflection: Think of a decision you are currently facing. How can you approach it with the goal of becoming more like Christ?

Day 5: Living Faith with Family
Living out your faith with your family means modeling what it means to follow Christ together. It involves integrating faith into everyday life and showing your family the love and character of Jesus. This approach encourages families to grow spiritually together, creating an environment where faith is lived out authentically and collectively. [01:14:22]

"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, ESV)

Reflection: How can you intentionally incorporate faith into your daily family activities this week? What specific steps can you take to model Christ's love to your family?

Quotes

One of the things that we can very easily do when reading 1 Corinthians chapter 7 is turn this into a rule book. And I have heard sermons from chapter 7 where people are saying very clearly, this is why you should get married, this is why you shouldn't get married, this is who should get married, this is who should have sex, and how often husbands and wives should have sex, and this is what you need to do. [00:41:52] (24 seconds)

And he even uses the sexual relationship in marriage as a wonderful example. That's what he's doing in verses three through five where he's saying, listen, you ought not to think only about yourself. You need to think about your spouse, husbands, wives. Think about how you serve one another. Your body isn't just your own anymore. You need to be mutually submissive and mutually serving and giving of yourselves to one another. [00:47:18] (32 seconds)

And he's saying the answer to this question is found in our identity. Our identity is in Christ. And he gives, I think, a few different examples to sort of contradict common thinking. And I want to run through these and just kind of share some observations with you. [00:49:31] (20 seconds)

Sin is more about, are you going away from God, or are you going towards God? This idea of sin as like, how can I do all of the right things in the right order so that I can be perfect? And God is saying, I just want you to be with me. I want you to long to be with me. Intimacy with me. With our father, creator, loving, ultimate master of the universe, God. [00:54:39] (32 seconds)

And this is the problem with legalism. It gets us all turned around and so hyper fixated on trying to determine what's right or wrong, am I doing it right, or is this not perfect, or is Billy doing it better than me? That we're so inward focused. [00:55:29] (19 seconds)

And what Paul is saying is you can be called to be followers of Jesus and build his kingdom wherever you are right now. And far too often, we go through life pining for whatever next level there is. some mythical next step that we can unlock and then life will be great. We think to ourselves, I'm going to be able to follow Jesus well once I'm out of the house. [01:03:05] (30 seconds)

Wherever you are finding your identity in Christ and remaining laser-focused on our mission to glorify him and to build his kingdom. Because our identity is in Christ, not our family. [01:10:39] (14 seconds)

Live out your faith with your family, not just to your family. I think way too often we think, well, my family is my ministry. And guys, that is very true. But don't stop there. [01:14:22] (16 seconds)
