Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

1. "Our God isn't just good to us. He is goodness itself. He does not just do the next right thing. He is righteousness. He is ferociously holy. And yet He loves you unconditionally. That is the God we serve. That is why we are here this morning. We are not here to check a box. We are here to worship. We worship the one true God who secured our lives and the one true God who stronger than ever sent his only son to die for us." [00:21:49] (31 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

2. "Paul's in prison as he's writing this letter. And his proposition is simple. In spite of all that goes on in the world, you would still have joy in the Lord. That all those feelings of happiness that we depend on, those are supposed to fade over time. But the joy you find in Jesus will only get stronger until the end of time. Like the joy we have available to us this morning can never, ever, ever be taken away from us." [00:23:46] (28 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "Now this week, Paul wants to make sure that we don't confuse working out our salvation with working for our salvation. Those are very, very different things. He's going to reaffirm that we rely on what Jesus has done for us, not on what we can do for him. That we trust in his righteousness, not in our own, because our best righteousness is as filthy rags before the Father. Hear me this morning. What you have available to you in Christ is better than anything else you will ever find in the world." [00:25:18] (42 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

4. "God doesn't want us to form a bunch of man-made traditions. What he wants us to do is to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ into spiritual transformation. Who you were before Christ doesn't matter. It's who you are in Christ. It's who you are in Christ that matters now. You've been given a new citizenship. You've been given a new heart. Your mind is being renewed all in Christ." [00:30:37] (29 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "The good news is not if you do enough good works God will eventually find you worthy and allow you to worship him. The good news isn't that we can rely on religion for our redemption. The good news is that we can have a relationship with God the Father through God the Son if we remain in Jesus Christ. And from day one, the church has struggled because we've tried to replace our relationship with Jesus with a religion that ultimately is all about us." 6. "Jesus plus anything equals nothing. If you add anything to the gospel, you missed the point. When you add something to Jesus, you take everything away from the power of the gospel. When you try to earn God's grace, you mutilate the basis of your faith. By its very definition, grace is undeserved, and unearned. So who you are, and what you do, cannot be relied on. Only who Jesus is, and what he's done for you, is reliable." [00:36:03] (41 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

7. "If you are one degree wrong about the gospel, if you add anything to Jesus, then there's nothing left. He is enough. He is enough. Then Paul says in verse 6, As for righteousness, I obeyed the law without fault. So now Paul's transitioning from who he was and the good works he has done to his own following of the law. Man, the most miserable, miserable Christians I have ever met are always the most legalistic." [00:38:42] (41 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

8. "No one has to clean themselves up before they come to God. You come to God and he cleans you up in Jesus. That's how it works. The message isn't follow the law and you'll eventually find the Lord. Right? It's find the Lord and he will place the law in your heart and write it on your mind. Like we deal with people's behavior and do nothing with what they believe." [00:41:15] (27 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "Yes, everything else is worthless when compared to the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord. For his sake, I've discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. So Paul's saying, listen, you can't rely on who you are and what you've done. You got to rely on who Jesus is and what he's done for you. And heaven forbid you trust in your own righteousness. Right? You're going to fall short. Ultimately, you're bankrupt." [00:47:43] (32 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

10. "The only thing that gets better and grows stronger for the rest of your life is the what you have in Christ. No one will ever be on their deathbed. I should have bought that Maserati. Nobody. Do not let anyone or anything keep you from getting closer to God and Jesus. The more Jesus you gain, the less everything else matters. It's a sense of freedom you will feel that you've never experienced before." [00:50:42] (34 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
