That's the question that we want to answer this morning. And to answer that question, take your Bibles and turn to James chapter 1. This morning, we are beginning our sermon series from the book of James. And I want to encourage you to turn to the book of James. And here's how I find the book of James. Even being a pastor for a long time, I go to the back of my Bible and rather than looking for the book of James, I look for the book of Hebrews. Because Hebrews is big. James is small. 4) "God cares more about your character than your comfort. It's what James, was communicating to these followers of Jesus. He's saying, God cares about you. And because He cares about you, He cares more about your character development, your maturity, becoming complete in Christ than He does your comfort, is He's going to allow you to experience this poverty, this persecution. So, it's important that we understand what God's goal is for us. David Platt says it so well. He says, in trials, we experience growth in godliness like we can never experience in any other way." 5) "So, how do we have joy in the midst of life's trials? Ask for and anticipate receiving wisdom from God. You know that trial that you're dealing with? You know how complicated and messy it is? God wants to give you wisdom in the midst of it. So, where does that wisdom come from? Psalm 111 says this, the fear of the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom. All those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever. So, as we think about seeking and asking God for wisdom, it begins with the fear of the Lord to understand that he is holy, that he is righteous, that we live our lives in honor and respect of him, that we care more about what God thinks than what anyone else thinks. 6) "James wants these followers of Jesus in the midst of their poverty to recognize that this world is not all that there is. And that their focus should not be on earthly wealth. That their focus should be on eternal perspective. He's reminding them, that life is short. In fact, he says later in James chapter 5, life is like a mist. Here today and gone tomorrow. And those of us in this room who are getting older, we recognize the reality of that. And so James is challenging these believers to say, hey, don't get caught up in what you have and what you don't have and who's rich and who's not. Focus on the eternal." Maybe for you, it's to memorize 2 Corinthians chapter 4, 16 through 18, to begin to embed all the truth in those verses in your heart and mind."
