Doubt is not the absence of faith but an intrusion that challenges it. Like a thief, it disrupts our peace, but it does not define our faith. Instead, it offers an opportunity to deepen our reliance on God. Doubt can be unsettling, but it is not the end of faith. It is an invitation to explore the depths of one's belief and trust in God. When doubt arises, it can feel like a thief that steals peace and certainty. However, it is in these moments of questioning that believers are called to lean more heavily on God, seeking His presence and guidance. This process of wrestling with doubt can lead to a more profound and resilient faith, as it encourages believers to confront their uncertainties and find assurance in God's unwavering love and promises. [03:38]
Hebrews 11:1-2 (ESV): "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation."
Reflection: Think of a recent doubt you have experienced. How can you use this doubt as an opportunity to deepen your faith and reliance on God today?
Day 2: Joy Amidst the Turmoil of Doubt
Joy and doubt can coexist, much like sorrow and joy. The troubled waters of doubt on the surface do not disturb the deep, still waters of faith beneath. This duality allows believers to experience joy even amidst uncertainty. Doubt often feels like a storm on the surface of one's life, causing confusion and unrest. However, beneath this turmoil lies a deep and abiding faith that remains unshaken. This faith is the source of true joy, allowing believers to find peace and contentment even when faced with uncertainty. By recognizing that doubt and joy can coexist, believers can embrace the fullness of their faith journey, trusting that God's presence is constant and His promises are true. [06:13]
Isaiah 26:3-4 (ESV): "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock."
Reflection: In what ways can you cultivate joy in your life today, even if you are experiencing doubt or uncertainty?
Day 3: Confidence in God's Faithfulness Despite Perplexity
Perplexity, a form of doubt, does not lead to despair. Paul’s acknowledgment of perplexity shows that believers can be confused yet confident in God's faithfulness, experiencing joy in His keeping. Perplexity is a natural part of the human experience, especially in the face of life's challenges and uncertainties. However, it does not have to lead to despair. Instead, it can be an opportunity to reaffirm one's trust in God's faithfulness. By acknowledging perplexity and choosing to trust in God's promises, believers can find joy and peace, knowing that God is in control and will guide them through their confusion. This confidence in God's faithfulness is a source of strength and hope, allowing believers to navigate life's uncertainties with grace and assurance. [07:05]
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (ESV): "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed."
Reflection: Reflect on a time when you felt perplexed but chose to trust in God's faithfulness. How did this choice impact your experience of joy and peace?
Day 4: Endurance and Hope Through the Suffering of Doubt
Suffering, including the suffering of doubt, produces endurance, which leads to hope. This hope is the foundation of our joy, as it assures us of our authenticity and God's faithfulness. Doubt can be a form of suffering, challenging one's beliefs and causing inner turmoil. However, it is through this suffering that endurance is built. As believers persevere through doubt, they develop a deeper sense of hope, rooted in the assurance of God's faithfulness. This hope becomes the foundation of joy, providing strength and encouragement in the face of life's challenges. By embracing the process of enduring doubt, believers can experience a more profound and authentic faith, grounded in the certainty of God's promises. [08:42]
James 1:2-4 (ESV): "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
Reflection: How can you embrace the process of enduring doubt in your life today, allowing it to produce hope and joy in your faith journey?
Day 5: Deepening Joy Through Overcoming Doubt
Each season of doubt, when overcome, strengthens our faith and deepens our joy. We learn to trust in God's promises, finding peace in the deep waters of our soul despite the surface turmoil. Doubt is not a permanent state but a season that can be overcome through faith and trust in God. As believers navigate through doubt, they are given the opportunity to strengthen their faith and deepen their joy. By trusting in God's promises and finding peace in the deep waters of their soul, believers can experience a more profound sense of joy and contentment, even amidst life's challenges. This process of overcoming doubt is a testament to the resilience of faith and the transformative power of God's love and grace. [09:27]
Psalm 42:11 (ESV): "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God."
Reflection: Consider a current doubt you are facing. How can you actively work to overcome this doubt, trusting in God's promises and deepening your joy in Him?
Sermon Summary
In today's reflection, we explored the complex relationship between doubt and joy in the Christian life. Many believers, like Steve from Nashville, grapple with doubts about God's existence, goodness, and purpose, especially when faced with the world's evils. These doubts, however, do not extinguish faith but rather challenge it. The key question is whether one can experience deepening joy in God while wrestling with such doubts. The answer is a resounding yes. Doubt and joy can coexist, much like sorrow and joy can, as Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 6:10. Doubt is not a conclusion but an intrusion, a thief that disrupts the peace of our minds. Yet, it is in this battle that we find the opportunity for joy.
Doubt can be likened to the troubled waters on the ocean's surface, while faith is the deep, still waters beneath. This imagery helps us understand that while doubt may cause temporary unrest, the foundational joy in God remains unshaken. Paul’s experience of perplexity, as mentioned in 2 Corinthians 4:8, illustrates that even in confusion, believers are not driven to despair. This underlying confidence in God's faithfulness can be a source of profound joy.
Moreover, Romans 5:3-4 teaches us that suffering, including the suffering of doubt, produces endurance, which in turn leads to hope. This hope is the bedrock of our joy. Each season of doubt, when met with triumph, deepens our assurance of God's faithfulness. We learn to scorn the surface turmoil because of the deep, paradoxical calm in our souls, rooted in Christ's promises. Thus, even in recurring seasons of doubt, believers can anticipate a deepening joy in God, knowing that He will hold them fast.

Sermon Clips
I think the answer to that last question is no it is not impossible to experience joy in God when doubts are present, and I think the answer to the question just before it is yes you can hope to have deepening joy in God in Seasons when you are also struggling with doubt. [00:01:33]
Doubt comes in all sizes and shapes and durations and levels of seriousness. So I'm going to call doubt of a Christian variety, that is doubt that real born-again Christians have from time to time. I'm going to call those doubts thoughts that enter our minds from who knows where. [00:02:08]
Now for the Christian these thoughts are not conclusions. These are intrusions. They break in like a thief, they start moving around the house of your mind and knocking things over and making threats. This really does happen to Jesus' followers. [00:03:26]
When Paul says we should fight the good fight of Faith, first Timothy 6:12, he included in his meaning when doubts intrude, fight them. Fight them with prayer, "I believe Lord help my unbelief," that's a prayer. Or fight them with the word, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word. [00:04:20]
During that battle, during that season of doubt, it is possible to experience alongside the anxiety of doubt, deepening joy in God. Now why would I say that? First, because the anxieties of Doubt are a kind of Sorrow, and Paul says in second Corinthians 6:10 that Christians can have experience of joy at the same time as experiencing sorrow. [00:05:07]
If sorrow and joy can mysteriously coexist in the same heart at the same time, and they can, then doubt and joy in God can coexist at the same time. Picture doubt as the troubled waters on the surface of the sea, and picture the new creation reality of Faith as the Deep Still Waters of the ocean. [00:06:00]
Perplexity is a state of confusion or uncertainty, and what is uncertainty but a kind of doubt? And yet Paul admits to experiencing this kind of perplexity doubt but knowing full well he will not be destroyed by it, perplexed but not driven to despair. [00:06:48]
Consider Romans 5:3 and 4, we rejoice in our sufferings knowing that suffering produces endurance and endurance produces a provenness and approvidness produces hope. Now what that text teaches is that the reason we can rejoice in times of misery, suffering hurts, it's misery. [00:07:46]
The reason we can rejoice in times of misery is that we have learned that enduring through the experiences of misery has the effect of giving us a sense of authenticity. We made it, we're real, we have been tested by fire and found to be approved and that he says produces hope and hope is why we can rejoice. [00:08:08]
Every season of Doubt with Triumph on the other side can bring a deepening sense that God is faithful, God will hold me fast. I can in a sense laugh at these intrusions on my peace, I can Scorn the foam and the waves on the surface because in the Deep Waters of my soul, I enjoy paradoxical calm because of Christ's keeping promises. [00:09:27]
You can hope to have deepening joy in God in these recurring seasons of doubt. Every season of Doubt with Triumph on the other side can bring a deepening sense that God is faithful. [00:10:04]
