Followers of Jesus are called to be salt and light, reflecting His glory and hope in a world often marked by tragedy, division, and darkness; this identity is not based on our own goodness, but on the God who created us and calls us to live with boldness and unity, even when the world feels overwhelming. [15:58]
Matthew 5:13-16 (ESV)
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Reflection: In what specific way can you bring light or preserve goodness in a situation this week where you are tempted to withdraw or lose hope?
By nature, people tend to pursue what seems right in their own eyes, often ignoring God’s commands and wisdom, but even in our wandering, God is still at work, using even our brokenness to accomplish His purposes. [40:11]
Judges 14:1-4 (ESV)
“Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. Then he came up and told his father and mother, ‘I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife.’ But his father and mother said to him, ‘Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?’ But Samson said to his father, ‘Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.’ His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.”
Reflection: Where in your life are you tempted to justify choices simply because they “feel right,” and how can you invite God’s wisdom into those decisions today?
Hidden sins, even those we think are small or private, inevitably come to light and carry consequences that can damage our lives and relationships, so it is vital to address them honestly before God rather than allowing them to grow and consume us. [45:22]
Judges 14:5-10 (ESV)
“Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. Then he went down and talked with the woman, and she was right in Samson’s eyes. After some days he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. He scraped it out into his hands and went on, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey from the carcass of the lion. His father went down to the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, for so the young men used to do.”
Reflection: Is there a “small” or hidden sin in your life that you need to bring into the light with God or a trusted believer before it grows and causes greater harm?
No matter our talents, intentions, or efforts, it is only by the Spirit of God working in and through us that we become truly useful for His purposes; our own strength and goodness fall short, but God delights to use even our weakness when we surrender to Him. [55:10]
Romans 3:10-12, 23-24 (ESV)
“As it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.’ ... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
Reflection: In what area of your life have you been relying on your own strength or goodness, and how can you invite the Holy Spirit to take the lead instead?
True change and usefulness in God’s kingdom come from daily confession of sin, humble surrender, and a consistent walk with Jesus, trusting that He knows best and will give us a better life as we let go of self-reliance and allow Him to transform us from the inside out. [01:01:07]
1 John 1:8-9 (ESV)
“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Reflection: What is one practical step you can take today to deepen your daily walk with Jesus—whether through confession, prayer, or time in His Word—so that He can continue to change you from the inside out?
This week has been marked by tragedy and division, and it’s easy to let fear, anger, or despair take root in our hearts. Yet, in the midst of darkness, we are reminded that every person—regardless of their background or beliefs—is an image bearer of God, worthy of dignity and respect. Our calling is to be salt and light in a world that desperately needs both, reflecting the hope and unity that only Jesus can bring. When the world feels fractured, our unity is not found in politics or personal opinions, but in Christ alone, who unites us across every line that would otherwise divide.
Looking at the life of Samson in Judges 14, we see a man who, despite being chosen by God, repeatedly pursues what is right in his own eyes. Samson’s story is a sobering reminder that even those set apart for God’s purposes can fall prey to pride, lust, and secret sin. He disregards God’s commands, dishonors his parents, and allows his desires to dictate his actions. Yet, even in Samson’s failures, God is still at work, using brokenness to accomplish His purposes. This is both a warning and a comfort: our sin has real consequences, but God’s sovereignty is not thwarted by our mistakes.
Secret sins, left unaddressed, always surface and bring destruction—not just to ourselves, but to those around us. Samson’s hidden compromises—touching the dead lion, drinking wine, and playing games with his calling—eventually unravel his life and relationships. Sin, if not put to death, grows and consumes. Whether it’s lust, anger, or pride, what starts small can become all-consuming if we refuse to confront it. The only way to break this cycle is through confession, repentance, and surrender to the Spirit of God.
Ultimately, it is not our strength, wisdom, or good deeds that make us useful to God, but His Spirit working in and through us. Our best efforts, apart from Christ, are like filthy rags. The invitation is to stop striving to be the hero of our own story and instead trust the true Hero—Jesus—who alone can save, transform, and empower us. Whether you are new to faith or have walked with Jesus for years, the call is the same: lay down your pride, confess your sin, and let the Spirit of God have preeminence in your life. Only then can we truly be salt and light, bringing hope to a broken world.
As a church, our focus is on Christ Jesus and he is the one that unifies all of us, regardless of your background, regardless of race or ethnicity or creed or political position. Jesus is the one who unifies us. [00:17:59] (18 seconds) #UnifiedInChrist
Because secret sin always has consequences, and it's always going to come out, right? Now, we're talking about the sin of lust. Samson has lust here. So let's just talk about that. We could take any sin, but we're just going to take lust for an example here. However, I've heard many people say, married guys especially, dude, it's okay. It's okay for me to look. It's okay for me to go window shopping. I'm never going to cheat on my wife, but why can't I look? Now, there's a lot of problems with that, actually. But the main issue is that it's sin. And it's sin in your heart, and it only takes one sin to separate you from God and damn you to a sinner's hell. Thank God for Jesus Christ. [00:49:19] (44 seconds) #LustLeadsToDestruction
Only God's spirit makes us useful. Church family, I tell you that it is only by God's spirit that we have anything good that is within us and every day that every Sunday that I get up here to share with you guys I just plead with God that it's his Holy Spirit that works through me and in your heart and life because it doesn't matter if I've got the best presentation or the best sermon or the best scripture picked out if his spirit does not work then it is all for naught. Maybe for some of you, you haven't done that. And you've been trying to seek God in your own way. You've been trying to earn His grace or earn His love. And today, I just ask you to stop. Stop trying to earn it because you can't. I can't. All our good deeds fall short. And would you just trust? In Jesus alone. [00:59:00] (23 seconds) #JesusNotUs
