Finding Hope and Identity Through Faithful Companionship

Summary

Today, I began by addressing the unique challenges of speaking on Mother's Day, especially as someone who has never been a mother. Despite the lack of a humorous personal anecdote, I shifted focus to the profound impact mothers have in our lives, often bearing the brunt of burdens and making significant sacrifices for their families.

In our series, "The Hall of Faith," we've explored various biblical figures who exhibited extraordinary faith. Today, we highlighted Naomi and Ruth, emphasizing that greatness and faith are gifts from God, not results of human effort. This perspective sets the stage for understanding that our identity and worth are not determined by our circumstances but by our responses to them.

Naomi's story, a central theme of today's discussion, illustrates this beautifully. Initially, Naomi experienced profound loss and bitterness after moving to Moab due to a famine, losing her husband and sons, and living in a foreign land. Her return to Bethlehem marked a significant turning point. Despite her bitterness, the community's reaction to her return and Ruth's loyal companionship began to restore Naomi's hope.

Ruth's marriage to Boaz, a kinsman redeemer, not only provided Naomi with security but also restored her status and joy within her community. This union, which led to the birth of Obed, grandfather of King David, shows how God's plans are perfect and timely, even when our plans fail.

The sermon concluded with a call to recognize that God is continually at work, even in the midst of our disappointments and losses. I invited the congregation to reflect on how they can find hope and renewal in God's faithfulness, just as Naomi did.

Key Takeaways:

### Bible Study Discussion Guide

#### Bible Reading
1. Ruth 1:1-2: "In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there."
2. Ruth 1:19-22: "So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, 'Can this be Naomi?' 'Don't call me Naomi,' she told them. 'Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.' So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning."
3. Ruth 4:14-17: "The women said to Naomi: 'Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.' Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. The women living there said, 'Naomi has a son!' And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David."

Devotional

Day 1: Identity Forged in Adversity
Our true identity is shaped by our responses to life's challenges, not merely by the challenges themselves. Naomi's journey from bitterness to blessing is a profound example of this. Initially overwhelmed by her losses, Naomi's identity could have been consumed by bitterness. However, her story did not end there. As she returned to Bethlehem and experienced the community's support and Ruth's unwavering loyalty, her perspective began to shift. This transformation highlights that our darkest moments do not define us; rather, our response to them does. Through Naomi's narrative, we see that embracing faith and resilience in the face of hardship can lead to unexpected blessings and a renewed sense of identity. [21:08]

James 1:12, "Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."

Reflection: Reflect on a recent challenge you faced. How did your response to this challenge shape your identity?

Day 2: Divine Timing Over Our Plans
Naomi's life teaches us that God's timing can diverge significantly from our own, yet His plans are always for our good. This key takeaway encourages us to maintain faith during periods of waiting and uncertainty. Naomi's story, particularly her return to Bethlehem and the subsequent events, underscores that God's plans unfold in His perfect timing. Even when our plans fail or we face delays, God is orchestrating events for our ultimate benefit, often preparing us for blessings we could not have anticipated. [18:09]

Habakkuk 2:3, "For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay."

Reflection: Can you think of a time when God's timing in your life proved to be perfect? How might this perspective change your approach to current waiting seasons?

---

Day 3: The Power of Faithful Companionship
Ruth's unwavering loyalty to Naomi not only provided Naomi with companionship but also played a crucial role in her restoration from bitterness to joy. This story exemplifies the significant impact that steadfast support and faithful companionship can have in our lives. It reminds us that God often uses relationships to bring about healing and redemption. Such divine appointments can transform our lives and the lives of others around us. [19:11]

Ruth 1:16-17, "But Ruth said, 'Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.'"

Reflection: Who has been a Ruth in your life, demonstrating faithful companionship? How can you show similar loyalty to someone in need today?

---

Day 4: Restoration Through Unexpected Means
God's methods for bringing about restoration and blessings in our lives are often unexpected. Naomi's restoration through Ruth and Boaz's marriage is a prime example of how God can use surprising circumstances and people to fulfill His purposes. This encourages us to remain open and receptive to the unexpected ways God may work in our lives, trusting that He is always at work, even in ways we might not initially understand. [19:46]

Isaiah 55:8-9, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."

Reflection: What unexpected event or person has God used in your life to bring about restoration? How can you remain open to His surprises?

---

Day 5: God's Presence in Our Struggles
Even when Naomi felt most abandoned, God was actively working behind the scenes to prepare a future filled with hope. This final takeaway reassures us that God is continually present in our struggles, working in ways we might not see or understand immediately. This assurance invites us to trust in God's continual presence and to find hope and renewal in His faithfulness, just as Naomi did. [22:22]

Psalm 139:7-10, "Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!"

Reflection: In what ways have you experienced God's presence during a difficult time? How can this assurance of His continual presence impact your current struggles?

### Quotes for Outreach

1. "To the brokenhearted. And he saves those who are crushed in spirit. Let me ask, does anyone here feel crushed in spirit today? Because I know at times our hopes and our dreams, man, they can get crushed. We get disappointed when life turns out different than we expected. But that doesn't mean God's not working. Because we need to know today that you, I, every single one of us, we matter to God. He sees. He sees the tiny details of what you worry about. He knows the pains that you feel." [22:22]( | | )

2. "Who sacrifices their time and their energy to encourage the hopes and dreams of their loved ones? It's usually mom. Who is most likely to trade their hopes and their dreams for a new set of hopes and dreams when life begins to change? Mom. This morning we are in week six, week six of our series, The Hall of Faith. Everyone say that with me. This morning, The Hall of Faith." [04:27]( | | )

3. "When Naomi felt like God had forgotten about and abandoned her, he was actually laying the groundwork to bless her, her nation, and honestly, all of humanity through what she thought was a disappointment." [18:09]( | | )

### Quotes for Members

1. "And those things that you've given up on, they may be the things that God is still working on. When it comes to Naomi, she would have never suspected all that God had in store for her. She thought her story was over when in reality she was still on chapter one." [22:58]( | | )

2. "But God wasn't done with her yet. You see, none of Naomi's plans had ever worked out, but God's plans were just getting started. And I want you to know today, you may feel like none of your plans have worked out and that life hasn't turned out to be anything like you expected it to be, but that doesn't mean God isn't still working. It doesn't mean that God isn't still moving in your life." [18:09]( | | )

3. "In chapter 4, verses 14 through 17, we get to see how all of this served as a reminder to Naomi that even though things might not be good today, that doesn't mean that things will never be good again. This is what it says. It says, the women said to Naomi, praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you, without a guardian redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel." [19:11]( | | )

4. "Church, I think if we're willing to be honest with ourselves, we'd recognize that we're not alone. We'd recognize that it's really easy to let the circumstances of this life define who we are, isn't it? And it doesn't matter if you're a mom or a dad or neither. Oftentimes, just like Naomi, it's so easy to let our circumstances define us. But something we need to know today is that who you are, it's not defined by what you've been through." [21:08]( | | )
