Finding Hope Amidst Sadness: Elijah's Journey
Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound theme of finding hope in sadness, focusing on the story of Elijah from 1 Kings 19. Elijah, a revered prophet, faced immense challenges and threats from King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, leading him into a deep state of fear and despair. Despite his spiritual stature and past victories, Elijah's story reminds us that even the most faithful can experience profound sadness and depression. This is not a reflection of a lack of faith but rather a consequence of living in a broken world.
We delved into how God responded to Elijah's despair. God provided for Elijah's physical needs through an angel, offering sustenance and rest, illustrating the importance of addressing both physical and spiritual needs during times of distress. Elijah's journey to Mount Horeb, lasting 40 days and nights, symbolizes the completeness of his spiritual journey through darkness, emphasizing that healing and restoration take time.
The narrative also highlights the gentle and peaceful nature of God's presence. God was not found in the chaos of the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper, signifying that true peace and hope are found in God's presence, beyond the turmoil of our circumstances. This gentle whisper represents Jesus' gentleness and peace, offering comfort and overcoming the chaos in our lives.
Furthermore, we discussed the importance of acknowledging God's holiness. Elijah's encounter with God required a recognition of God's holiness, reminding us that while God is loving and present, He is also sovereign and set apart. Our healing and hope are found in a relationship with Jesus, recognizing His holiness and trusting in His trustworthy nature.
As we reflect on these insights, we are reminded that Jesus is our source of hope, offering His presence, peace, and overcoming power in our lives. In our darkest moments, we can trust that God is with us, carrying us through with His grace and love.

Day 1: Faith and Sadness Can Coexist
In the story of Elijah, we see a powerful prophet who, despite his deep faith and past victories, experiences profound sadness and depression. This narrative reminds us that even the most spiritually strong individuals are not immune to the challenges and emotional struggles of life. Elijah's fear and despair, triggered by threats from King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, illustrate that sadness is not a sign of weak faith but a reality of living in a broken world. Our faith provides a foundation to navigate these challenges, offering us strength and resilience in the face of adversity. [09:16]
1 Kings 19:3-4 (ESV): "Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, 'It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.'"
Reflection: Think of a time when you felt deep sadness despite your faith. How can you allow your faith to be a source of strength and resilience in similar situations today?
Day 2: God's Provision in Despair
Elijah's story demonstrates how God cares for us in our darkest times, providing for both our physical and spiritual needs. When Elijah was in despair, God sent an angel to provide sustenance and rest, showing that divine help often comes in unexpected ways. This provision is a powerful reminder of God's constant presence and care, even when we feel alone or overwhelmed. It encourages us to trust that God will sustain us through our journeys of despair, offering the support we need to continue moving forward. [14:12]
1 Kings 19:5-6 (ESV): "And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, 'Arise and eat.' And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again."
Reflection: In what ways has God provided for you during difficult times? How can you remain open to recognizing and accepting His provision in your current circumstances?
Day 3: Peace in God's Presence
Elijah's encounter with God on Mount Horeb teaches us that true peace is found in the gentle whisper of God's presence, not in the chaos of our circumstances. While Elijah expected to find God in the dramatic forces of nature, it was in the stillness that he truly encountered God's peace. This narrative encourages us to focus on God's presence, allowing His peace to overcome the chaos in our lives. By seeking the gentle whisper of God, we can find solace and hope amidst the turmoil. [23:36]
1 Kings 19:11-12 (ESV): "And he said, 'Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.' And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper."
Reflection: How can you create space in your daily life to listen for God's gentle whisper? What practices can help you focus on His presence amidst life's chaos?
Day 4: Acknowledging God's Holiness
Elijah's encounter with God required a recognition of God's holiness, reminding us of the importance of acknowledging His sovereignty and set-apart nature. While God is loving and present, He is also holy and deserving of our reverence. This understanding invites us into a deeper relationship with God, where we can experience healing and hope. By recognizing God's holiness, we are encouraged to trust in His trustworthy nature and to approach Him with humility and awe. [25:01]
1 Kings 19:13 (ESV): "And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'"
Reflection: How does acknowledging God's holiness change the way you approach Him in prayer and worship? What steps can you take to cultivate a deeper reverence for His sovereignty in your life?
Day 5: Trust in Jesus' Overcoming Power
Jesus offers hope and restoration by overcoming the chaos in our lives. His presence brings peace and victory over our circumstances, reminding us that He is trustworthy and His kingdom brings hope now and forever. By trusting in Jesus' overcoming power, we can find strength and assurance in the midst of life's challenges. This trust invites us to rely on His presence and to embrace the hope that He offers, knowing that He is with us and will carry us through with His grace and love. [24:35]

Quotes
Listen. Let me be real honest. It doesn't matter how spiritual you are, how close to God you are, there are going to be times in your life, in the midst of the chaos of this world, that you are going to find yourself in deep sadness, in grief, and potentially even battling depression. [00:08:22] (37 seconds)
Two things I want to say. Sadness, grief, depression, like cancer and other life crises, are not a respecter of persons. There are going to be moments in our lives when we are so sad and so depressed that we may not be able to live. We may even consider taking our own life. [00:09:25] (30 seconds)
And that is something I want us to say. People of faith, people who love God with everything that they have, people with great spiritual lives may face severe sadness and depression. And it's not a lack of faith. It's the consequences of being in this broken world. [00:09:54] (19 seconds)
The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you. And so he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. And there he went into a cave and spent the night. [00:14:24] (19 seconds)
These few verses is the reality of what people face and what we face when we are sad and in grief and depressed. There's this overwhelming tiredness that we struggle through. There's this need for rest. There's need for physical nourishment and pay attention to our spiritual body. [00:15:01] (24 seconds)
And so even when we don't recognize, even when we're not aware, God and His angels are present to care for us. I have walked through some of the darkest moments with people, especially some of them in the moments of grief when someone very close to them has had a tragedy or some kind of a crisis, and sometimes it even ended in death. [00:16:28] (28 seconds)
picking up in the scripture it goes on and says then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord but the Lord was not in the wind and after the wind there was an earthquake but the Lord was not in the earthquake and after the earthquake came a fire but the Lord was not in the fire and after the fire came a gentle whisper and when Elijah heard it he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave [00:19:56] (38 seconds)
First thing I want to say is this. We cannot find God when we focus on the chaos of our current situation Jesus comes in a gentle whisper. Psalm, I believe it's 46 verse 10 says, Be still and know that I am God. But this idea that Jesus comes to us in a gentle whisper says so much about who Jesus is. [00:21:28] (31 seconds)
Jesus is the source of kingdom hope. It is His gentleness that brings it to us. But here's the other thing I see in this gentle whisper, and that is Jesus brings peace. If you go back and read the story, what you're going to see is there wasn't any peace. Because God wasn't in the storm. He wasn't in the wind. He wasn't in the earthquake. And He wasn't in the fire. [00:22:40] (36 seconds)
But in order to hear God, Elijah had to respect God's holiness. See, God's different in that way. He wants our participation, he wants us to partner with him, and we find healing in our relationship with Jesus. Not apart from it. [00:25:45] (20 seconds)
