Today's Gospel we find Jesus standing among a great crowd healing the sick, casting out unclean spirits, and proclaiming blessings upon the poor, the hungry, and the grieving. His words are comforting and challenging. He turns the world's values upside down, declaring that true blessing is found not in power or wealth but in trust, love, and reliance on God. [00:01:53]

This passage healing is not just physical but a restoration of dignity, purpose, and hope as a reminder that God is present in our suffering and that even in our pain, we are deeply loved. I want you to think about that proclaiming blessings upon the poor, the hungry, and the grieving. [00:02:24]

In "Shadowlands," which tells us the story of C.S. Lewis and his love for Joy, a brilliant thinker and theologian, he spent years contemplating suffering in the abstract. Still, when Joy is diagnosed with terminal cancer, his faith is tested in the most personal way. He realizes that no intellectual understanding of God can prepare him for the raw pain of grief. [00:05:09]

Through his loss, he sees love as a blessing even when it brings suffering. His journey reminds us that healing is not the absence of pain but the ability to embrace love and faith in the midst of it. [00:05:39]

A man called Ove presents a different kind of healing found in community. An elderly widower believes his best days are behind him. He is lonely and angry and sees no reason to keep going. But when a young, persistent family moves in next door, they slowly pull him out of grief through their kindness. [00:05:59]

He rediscovers his purpose, not through grand gestures but small, everyday acts of connection and care. The story echoes Jesus's blessings: those who mourn will be comforted, those who feel lost will find belonging. Healing comes not through a change in his circumstances but through the love of others who refuse to let him disappear into his sorrow. [00:06:25]

In "The Book Thief," we see another kind of healing, one found in the resilience of the human spirit. The story follows Liesel, a young girl living in Nazi Germany who finds solace in books and the relationships she forms during a time of great suffering. Even amid war, loss, and cruelty, she discovers the power of words. [00:08:42]

The strength of love and the ability to hold on to hope. Though she experiences deep pain, she also experiences moments of joy, kindness, and connection that help her survive. Like the people who gathered around Jesus desperate for healing, Liesel's journey reminds us that even in the darkest times, there is still light to be found. [00:09:03]

Healing is not always dramatic; often, it comes in small, steady acts of love and presence. Listen to that part: it comes in small, steady acts of love and presence. You don't have to have all the answers when you're there for someone. Sometimes it's just a matter of being there, period, even if it's in silence. [00:12:14]

As we journey through the valleys of grief and struggle, we often cannot see healing as it unfolds. It can feel slow, distant, and even impossible. But then one day, we wake up and realize that the time has carried us forward. [00:13:20]

Moving through grief, including anger, doubt, and sorrow, is not a betrayal of faith but part of the process of healing. When we finally emerge, we find that we were not broken beyond repair. We are changed but also stronger, wiser, and more open to the grace that has been carrying us all along. [00:15:41]

God of mercy and healing, we come before you as people longing for wholeness. Teach us to embrace your blessings even in struggles. Help us to be agents of healing in the lives of others, to show love, to extend compassion, and to be present for those in need. May we trust in your love that it sustains us and calls us forward. Amen. [00:16:48]
